The form

Chelsea have had a great start to our 2020/21 domestic campaign having been undefeated in eight matches, consisting of six victories and two draws. The Blues are currently in third place in league standings behind Manchester United and Arsenal, with two games in hand.

Emma Hayes’ squad were last in action on Wednesday 16 December against Benfica in the Champions League and the round of 32 tie finished 3-0 (8-0 on aggregate) to the Blues. Bethany England notched our first goal of the night when her cross from the left-hand side, which appeared to be for strike partner Sam Kerr, flew into the net over the Benfica goalkeeper. Kerr extended our lead on the 64th minute and registered her first European goal when she latched onto a wonderful through ball from Guro Reiten to place calmly home. Then a stoppage-time goal sealed the victory when England tapped in a cross from Fran Kirby.

Reading are sixth in the league having won three, lost three and drawn four. The Royals signed off 2020 with a 3-1 away triumph against Brighton & Hove Albion. Jess Fishlock netted two first-half goals and a stoppage-time goal from Rachel Rowe sealed the three points for Kelly Chambers’ side.

Chelsea v Reading recent head-to-head record

The last time we played Reading was last season in the same fixture after the winter break and the Blues earned all three points in a come-from-behind victory at Kingsmeadow. Reading took an early lead through Fara Williams who struck a half volley sweetly on the edge of the box and then our opponents were reduced to 10 players after 16 minutes when their No.1 Grace Moloney fouled Sam Kerr outside of the area. The equaliser came five minutes before half-time when Australian forward Kerr back-heeled magnificently into the path of England who calmly rounded the keeper to place the ball into the back of the net. We went ahead in the second half when Reiten lobbed Rachael Laws in the Royals goal with a superb left-footed volley, and our third came with 15 minutes left to play when substitute Erin Cuthbert fired home a rebound from close-range.

Prior to that we met in the group stage of Continental League Cup in December 2019 and the game finished in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. Deanna Cooper, who now plays for Reading, got us back into the game when she cancelled out Jo Potter’s free-kick. Due to the competition rules, the match went straight to a penalty shoot-out and our opponent came out on top to join us in the last eight of the competition.

The two sides locked horns at Adams Park on the last day of the 2018/19 WSL campaign and the match was an unforgettable occasion as we said farewell to Hedvig Lindahl after an incredible four-and-a-half spell in between the Chelsea sticks. The match was a close contest and ended in a 3-2 win to the Blues.
