Emerson reflects on an important FA Cup win

Emerson Palmieri felt our big win over Morecambe in the FA Cup was an important moment for Chelsea as we got back to winning ways.

Having experienced a difficult period in the Premier League, we comfortably saw off our lower-league opposition at Stamford Bridge with a professional 4-0 victory, during which we barely gave the visitors a sniff of the ball.

It was also significant as Frank Lampard rotated his line-up to give several players, Emerson included, a chance to impress while gaining form and fitness.

‘I feel good because I’m training hard every day, I’m always ready when the manager puts me on the pitch and I try to do my best,’ said the Italy international.

‘The game yesterday was very important for us because in the last game we lost. So the most important thing was to have a solid game and get the victory, like we did.’

The game against Morecambe also gave Emerson plenty of opportunities to get forward and contribute in the attacking third, having several attempts on goal from the edge of the box.

Part of the reason for those shooting opportunities was his underlapping to come inside and overload the Morecambe defence as Callum Hudson-Odoi provided our width.

While the left-back insisted he wasn’t too disappointed not to get his name on the scoresheet with one of those efforts, given the result, he was quick to praise the characteristics of our wingers, which give him those opportunities going forward and allow us to vary our approach.

‘I tried three times, it didn’t happen in this game, but I’m happy for the team and the result,’ he added.

‘Callum, Hakim or Christian, they like to stay between the lines, so for me I have the space for the overlap. Or yesterday, Callum stayed high more with me inside, so this is a good connection. It depends on the opponent and we try to move the defenders.’
