Confidence was a word on the lips of Tammy Abraham as he spoke after his hat-trick saw off the challenge from Luton Town in Sunday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie.

Naturally, his three goals in the 3-1 win, the third of which pretty much settled the result after Luton halved the deficit before half-time, are good for his own state of mind but he is hopefully they, and the Chelsea performance overall, will also help with the task of putting our Premier League campaign back on track. We play Wolves at home on Wednesday.‘Obviously it is great to score a hat-trick and win the game,’ Abraham acknowledged.‘My favourite goal was the third, it was great link-up play and I managed to get into the box and Callum put it across goal for me to get the tap-in.

‘It is an honour to play for this club and to score goals and get a hat-trick, it is what dreams are made of. Give credit to Luton, they are a good side, but we had to build our confidence back and go back to the normal routine of what we are good at.‘We know how good we are, results haven’t been going our way recently, so we needed to come out and build our confidence back, and we have another game on Wednesday.‘Hopefully we will go into that game with confidence, try to get an early goal and try to settle early.’

Despite his fellow striker Timo Werner failing to convert a penalty near the end against Luton, Abraham paid tribute to the hard work put in by his colleague throughout and it was Werner who supplied the pass from which the no.9 scored the opener. Werner lined up initially behind Abraham in the middle but on average was the more forward player.‘I enjoyed it a lot,’ Abraham said of their strike partnership.‘It takes the pressure off me, always making the run in behind and coming to feet. Sometimes it is tough to do too much at once, so playing with Timo, we kind of equalled it out. When he comes short, I come long and we had a good combination in this game. I enjoyed it and hopefully it can carry on like that.’

The 23-year-old confirmed that even in games when only one of the central strikers is chosen, whether it be him, Werner or Olivier Giroud, the competition for that place is not a concern.‘I have been at the club since the age of six so I have known how it has always been. Chelsea always bring top-quality players in and there is always going to be great competition.‘We drive each other. When one of us scores a goal the others are delighted for him and for me and Timo to be on the pitch together was an honour. I encouraged him and he encouraged me and we got through it. It was unlucky for him not to get a goal as well.’

Abraham also had words for his fellow Academy graduate Mason Mount who was captain of the team for the first time.‘It is amazing and before the game when we saw that Mason was captain we were delighted for him. He has been in excellent form.’
