Mateo Kovacic said that the Chelsea players always felt they could get a result at Tottenham and that our fast start in north London played a big part in the victory.

Thomas Tuchel’s side dominated from the off against Jose Mourinho’s Spurs, with Jorginho’s first-half penalty proving the difference in our 1-0 win.

The game could, and perhaps should, have been out of sight before the hosts applied some late pressure but overall Kovacic – who shone once again in midfield with Jorginho and Mason Mount – was pleased with our efforts.

‘We are very happy with the three points,’ the Croatian said when reflecting on the derby win.

‘Heading into the game we were confident, because we came here off the back of two good performances and we knew that we could come and get a result here.

‘I think we did a good job. We were a little unhappy that we didn’t score the second goal to kill off the game, which would have made things a little easier in the last 15 or 20 minutes, but we have to be happy because it’s always difficult to play against Tottenham.

‘That’s three sheets now and the defence and the goalkeeper is doing amazing and it makes us very confident in them.

‘The whole team is doing well defensively, we are doing great and I think we have improved a lot in the last three games. We need to keep moving forward like this because there is a still of lot of the season to be played and I think we can do great things.’

Kovacic has quickly established himself as a regular under Thomas Tuchel, starting in midfield in all three of the German’s games in charge of the Blues.

Impressing in a deep midfield role, Kovacic has praised the impact the new head coach has had on the squad and following our unbeaten start, the Croatian believes the Blues can begin to look up the table once again.

'We have started well under the new coach,’ added Kova. ‘That’s two wins in a row, plus a draw in his first game, and he’s explained to us exactly what he wants from us. We have started well but I think we can do even better.

‘We played well against Tottenham and if we continue like that I think we can certainly get back into the top four. I think with this team we are good enough and we deserve to be there but you have to work hard for it. So let’s take things game by game and see where it takes us.’
