Merson wants Haaland at Chelsea

Paul Merson believes that Chelsea have a better chance of signing Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland than their rivals.

The Norwegian is regarded as one of the best talents in the world and Chelsea have reportedly been interested in bringing the 20-year-old to Stamford Bridge.

In his column in the Daily Star, the former Arsenal midfielder stated why he believes Haaland would be perfect for the Blues.

‘Of all the teams who are in for Erling Haaland, Chelsea are the ones who need him most,’ he said. ‘They have always been successful with someone who has presence up front and Haaland has that.

‘He is going to score bundles wherever he goes.’

The 2020 Golden Boy winner has scored 23 goals in 23 games this season, he also has six assists to his name. It‘s reported that Haaland’s release clause is around £75 million.

‘Whoever gets him, it will be worth it,’ Merson added. ‘He puts up numbers and he keeps on doing it.

‘Whoever signs him will have a chance of winning the league.’

Carragher on Werner and Henry comparison

Jamie Carragher has compared Timo Werner to Thierry Henry after his performance in our 2-0 win against Newcastle United last night.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, the former Liverpool captain highlighted the German’s movement and likened it to the former Arsenal attacker.

‘He was the key man,’ the pundit said about Werner’s performance. ‘I want to look at his touch map because when he came to England, you were asking what sort of position he was and what position does he play.

‘Lampard used him on the wide left and through the middle. It was really interesting how he was used tonight; almost a mixture of both.

Werner was on the scoresheet and assisted Olivier Giroud’s opener against the Magpies. He was also awarded man of the match for his performance. Carragher said his movement reminded him of another former Premier League attacker.

‘You see his touch map and you think of Werner from RB Leipzig, he was almost in that Thierry Henry role,’ he continued. ‘That position on the inside left, he wants to make runs there and get the ball.’

Tomori sad to see online abuse

Fikayo Tomori believes that even though social media has positives, it’s still a toxic place for athletes of colour.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the centre-back spoke about the recent cases of team-mates Antonio Rudiger and Reece James being subjected to racial abuse online.

‘Social media is good when you are winning,’ Tomori stated. ‘But then it can turn to a bad side when it turns racist, where people get abused.

‘It’s a small percentage, a minority, but they’re still there, it’s prevalent not just in football and sport but in life as well.’

The Chelsea loanee who is currently at AC Milan also opened up about his friend Axel Tuanzebe who became a victim of racial abuse online.

‘It’s sad to see, especially when it’s people you know for example Tuanzebe from Manchester United, I know him personally,’ he said. ‘I know people are emotional and passionate but to go to that level of frustration and anger.

‘When it’s someone you know personally, it does hit home even more so.’
