Olivier Giroud produced such a moment to secure a 1-0 victory for Chelsea in our Champions League Round of 16 clash with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday as the France striker emulated these other gorgeous strikes by the Blues.

Eidur Gudjohnsen vs Leeds United – Jan 2003

In terms of execution, Eidur Gudjohnsen’s magnificent strike in our 3-2 win over Leeds United at Stamford Bridge in 2003/04 could be the Blues’ best-ever bicycle kick goal.

With Chelsea trailing 1-0, Frank Lampard chased the ball down the right flank and sent a high cross into the box as two Leeds defenders tried to close him down.

Gudjohnsen was lurking just outside the six-yard box but as the cross drifted away from the Icelandic striker towards the penalty spot, he adjusted himself brilliantly and met the ball with a perfectly timed right-footed effort which flew past goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Deco vs Bolton Wanderers – Dec 2008

While Deco netted only six times in his two seasons at Stamford Bridge, his goals for the Blues tended to be pretty special.

His most acrobatic effort came in a 2-0 win at Bolton in 2008/09 after Trotters goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen had made a great save to deny Salomon Kalou. Michael Ballack headed the rebound back towards Deco and the Portugal midfielder leapt off the ground before sending a well-placed right-footed shot past Jaaskelainen’s outstretched glove into the bottom corner.

Nicolas Anelka vs Watford – Feb 2009

Chelsea were on the verge of a shock exit to Watford in the FA Cup when Nicolas Anelka conjured a wonderful effort to get us back on level terms in the 75th minute.

Lampard’s corner from the left was met in the crowded Watford box by Branislav Ivanovic, who nodded it on to the far post where the French striker, with his back to goal and two defenders in close attention, produced an instinctive finish with his left boot which flew over his head into the top corner.

It was the first of three goals in 15 minutes by Anelka as the Blues won 3-1 and went on to win the competition.

Diego Costa vs Swansea – Sep 2016

Diego Costa scored eight of his 58 goals for Chelsea against Swansea with his most spectacular strike against the Welsh side salvaging a 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium in 2016/17.

With the Blues trailing with eight minutes remaining, a shot by Ivanovic struck a Swans defender and looped towards the six-yard box where the Brazilian striker acrobatically twisted his body and sent a thunderous effort past Lukasz Fabianski to level the score.

The one that got away…Didier Drogba vs Wigan Athletic – May 2010

Didier Drogba could have marked a special occasion with a spectacular overhead effort but it didn’t quite happen.

The Blues were 4-0 up against Wigan and needed to score only one more to become the first club to net 100 goals in a Premier League season when Drogba met Ashley Cole’s cross on the full but saw his shot kept out by Mike Politt’s fine reflex save on the line.

It would prove only a brief reprieve for the Latics as Lampard crossed the ball back into the six-yard box for Drogba to head in his first of three goals as the Blues romped to a club-record 8-0 win.
