Yesterday afternoon Chelsea FC Women sealed a spot in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League after our round of 16 second leg versus Atletico Madrid finished 1-1 and 3-1 on aggregate. Both Emma Hayes and goal scorer Maren Mjelde have spoken about the tie.

Following COVID-19 restrictions on the UK entering Spain, the Blues travelled to the north of Italy to take on our opponents for the away leg.The match in Monza was very much different to the encounter at Kingsmeadow seven days prior, but one thing it did have in common was penalties!

In a space of just minutes, each side were given a spot-kick, which meant over the course of the two games five had been awarded.

Atletico had the opportunity to go ahead with 15 minutes left of play but Toni Duggan struck the crossbar to keep it even. However, Mjelde, who converted from the spot last week stepped up minutes later to extend our advantage.Although the Spanish side netted a consolation goal in added time, the Chelsea boss was still impressed with the performance from her Chelsea squad.

‘First of all I’m really pleased we’re going through to the next round. I think about some of the away games we’ve had in the past at this stage of the competition and they are never straight forward, particularly playing a game off the back of playing with 10 players last Wednesday and then a tough encounter at the weekend at West Ham.

‘The accumulation showed in our performance, we were a little leggy. I’m disappointed to concede a goal, I always felt like we were going to have a bit more possession away from home because they're pushing to get a goal.‘When you’re not moving in the exact same manor you are normally, we had to be really disciplined defensively to keep our lines tight which we did, but the moments that we didn’t was when they exploited us.‘Thankfully another crossbar kept us in the game and then the penalty to us. I’ve never been in a game of football across two legs where there has been five penalties, a strange game,’ Hayes continued.

Mjelde gave her thoughts post-match and the Norway international shared her delight in progressing to the last-eight of the European competition.‘I’m just happy that we got the win, the most important thing was to go through to the next round and we did.‘Of course it’s always nice to contribute with a goal and it happened again. We knew it was going to be a different game, we knew they had to score and be more attacking and they were.‘They had a good game plan and we struggled a bit, but we’re such a good defensive unit so we know how to defend against these types of teams.‘Obviously I’m a bit disappointed with the goal that they scored but it didn’t really matter because we won.‘It’s good, this is where we want to be, this is the competition we’ve been missing from last year so it’s good to be in it again. There is only really good teams left so it’s going to be interesting to see who we get.'

The draw is tomorrow (Friday) at 11am UK time.

The Blues now have a Continental Tyres League Cup final against Bristol City to look forward to and the Chelsea boss has highlighted the importance of recovering ahead of Sunday.‘I’m so proud of the team to be going through to the next round with a final to look forward to, it’s so important we regroup, get fresh and hopefully do our fans proud at the weekend.’The Champions League quarter-final and semi-final draw is set to take place at 11am (UK) time tomorrow. The first-leg of that tie will take place on 23/24 March and the second-leg will be on 31 March/ 1 April.
