Chelsea ranked joint-best English team of last decade

The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has revealed Chelsea were tied with Manchester City as the best English teams in their overall club ranking for the decade from 2011 to 2020.

The Zurich-based organisation produces a monthly club ranking which awards points for wins and draws in domestic and international competitions with a higher point weightage for results in major continental tournaments like the Champions League and Europa League and higher-ranked national leagues like the Premier League, Bundesliga and La Liga.

After totalling the points accumulated by clubs over the 10-year period from 2011 to 2020, the report on the IFFHS website indicated Chelsea and City were the top-ranked English sides with both teams amassing 2113 points.

Manchester United were third with 2020 points while Arsenal were close behind in fourth on 2016. Tottenham Hotspur rounded off the top five English clubs while Liverpool were sixth after they failed to qualify for the Champions League in six of 10 seasons.

Chelsea and City were joint-seventh in the overall ranking, which was led by Barcelona on 2877 points with Real Madrid in second place and Bayern Munich third.

Chelsea lifted eight trophies during the decade including the 2012 Champions League, two Europa League titles and two Premier League crowns.
