The form

The Blues returned from Budapest on Wednesday victorious after our heart-stopping 2-1 win against Wolfsburg Women in the first leg tie of the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Fran Kirby, Sam Kerr duo struck again with Kerr firing home the first goal to give Chelsea the lead at 55 minutes. They then combined once again, taking advantage of the Wolsfburg goalkeeper’s costly mistake to set up Pernille Harder, who netted her first goal against her former club.

The two-goal lead lasted a matter of minutes with Dominique Janssen scoring a penalty following a foul on Svenja Huth by Magda Eriksson inside the box. Chelsea held on to secure our first ever victory over Wolfsburg and hold the advantage going into the second leg.

Just days before that success in Budapest, Chelsea won the FA Continental League Cup final 6-0 at Watford’s Vicarage Road against Bristol City, bringing the trophy back to Kingsmeadow for the second year in a row. Kerr kicked things off, scoring from close-range after just 2 minutes, going on to net a further two for a hat-trick. Kirby added two more to the mix with Reiten scoring the sixth and final goal of the day.

Chelsea’s last Women’s Super League game was away to Everton, picking up all three points with a 3-0 win in Merseyside. We go into the match tomorrow following four consecutive league wins.

Aston Villa sit 10th in the league, having won one of their last five games. Villa were last in action last Wednesday, going down 2-0 to Brighton and Hove Albion at Banks’s Stadium. The goals were scored either side of half-time from Aileen Whelan and Inessa Kaagman.

Chelsea Women vs Aston Villa Women recent head-to-head record

Chelsea’s first and only encounter with Villa this season was in January, with Hayes’ squad taking home a 4-0 win at Banks’s Stadium to reach 32 games unbeaten, the longest run in WSL history.

The historic night began with Sam Kerr smashing home a half-volley after only three minutes. The Blues stayed in complete control throughout the match as Villa struggled to get out of their own half.

A second goal arrived with Kerr crossing over to Bethany England, who took a firm header to leave goalkeeper Lisa Weiss with no chance. Chelsea continued to dominate in the second half with Pernille Harder driving home an edge-of-the-box shot and Guro Reiten whipping in a free-kick which was netted by Eriksson.

As well as achieving the longest consecutive unbeaten run, the Blues also returned to the top of the WSL standings, where we have remained ever since.

Next up for the Blues

Chelsea’s next test after Villa will be the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie against Wolfsburg in Budapest. The match takes place on Wednesday 31 March and has a 1pm (UK) kick-off.
