Kai Havertz played a major part as Germany secured a 1-0 away win against Romania to make it two wins from two in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Chelsea attacker laid on the only goal of the game for Serge Gnabry after just 16 minutes in Bucharest, while Toni Rudiger performed well in defence as Germany kept a clean sheet.

Timo Werner made it a hat-trick of Blues appearances for Joachim Low’s side tonight, after the Chelsea striker came on for Havertz with just under 15 minutes remaining.

Elsewhere in World Cup qualifying, Emerson was an unused sub as Italy recorded a 2-0 win over Bulgaria in Sofia.

In the Under-21 European Championships, England are on the brink of a group stage elimination from the competition following a 2-0 defeat to Portugal in Slovenia.

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi missed out through injury, but on-loan Swansea defender Marc Guehi featured throughout this tie while Conor Gallagher, currently spending the season on loan at West Brom, came on as a late substitute.

The defeat means England’s fate is out of their hands ahead of the final group game against Croatia on Wednesday. The Three Lions need to win that game to have any hope of qualifying, but they also need Portugal to defeat Switzerland.

Should Switzerland claim a point, then England will be out. If both England and Portugal win, then it would come down to a three-way head-to-head between the Three Lions, Croatia and Switzerland for one place in the knockout stage.
