His involvement for Gareth Southgate’s side in Tirana made it 48 appearances for the season for the midfielder, who is well on course to surpass his hefty total of 59 games from 2019/20.

Those numbers indicate just how important the 22-year-old has become for club and country, with Southgate hailing him as ‘an exceptional player’ following his fourth international goal on Sunday evening, a classy finish lifted over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

‘He finds space intelligently, he manipulates the ball very well, he creates chances and he can score goals,’ said the England manager. ‘I thought his performance was excellent.’

Mount is one of four outfield players to have started both internationals last week for England and Southgate has confirmed he is fit and could be in the team again for Poland’s visit to Wembley on Wednesday evening.

After Mount missed some of Tuesday's training, Southgate reported: 'No, he didn’t warm up with the team but he did the rest of the session with the team. He should be fine.' Playing again is a prospect that the player himself is happy to embrace.

‘I’m still young so I want to play every game I can and as many games as I can,’ he said after the victory in Albania.

‘My mentality is always that I just keep working hard to get into the team, to stay in the team and try to get as many games as I can. That is always my focus.’

Mount’s club form has also drawn praise in recent months as he has established himself under Thomas Tuchel’s management, scoring three goals in the past nine matches. He acknowledges that confidence is playing a part in his performances and that is probably the main reason why he doesn’t want anything to stop the gathering momentum.

‘Obviously I feel very fortunate to have started the last seven games for England,’ he added. ‘I’m in a good place at the moment and I’m confident.

‘I’ve just got to keep that going. Now the focus is on the next game and it’s a massive game against Poland. Their team is very strong but as a team we go into it with the mentality of wanting to win.’

Wanting to win and wanting to play is Mason Mount’s way. With Chelsea still battling on three fronts and a European Championship finals that culminates at Wembley on the horizon, don’t bet against him reaching 70 appearances before the summer is out.
