Chelsea FC Women are through to the Champions League semi-finals after a 5-1 aggregate win over last year’s finalists Wolfsburg.

The Blues executed the game plan perfectly with goals from Sam Kerr, Pernille Harder and Fran Kirby earning a 3-0 victory.

Chelsea were given the opportunity to open the scoring when the referee awarded a penalty after Kerr was brought down in the box by Sara Doorsen-Khajeh.

Harder made no mistake from 12-yards as she sent the keeper the wrong way to give Chelsea a second-leg lead.

Immediately after our opener, Ewa Pajor couldn’t find the target from six-yards out and Wolfsburg were made to pay for the missed opportunity as the Blues doubled our advantage minutes later.

With her back to goal, Kerr controlled a ball into the box with a deft touch before turning and firing a low drive past Wolfsburg goalkeeper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek to give Chelsea a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Chelsea were just as impressive in the second half as a strong defensive showing from the Blues withstood pressure from Wolfsburg and denied our opponents any hope of getting back into the tie.

The Blues then rounded of an impressive performance with a third goal when Kirby provided a cool finish on 81 minutes to complete the scoring and book a spot in the last four of the competition for the third time in our history.

We will now face either Bayern Munich or Rosengard in the Champions League semi-finals. Chelsea will be the away team for the first leg on 24/25 April, with the home leg to be played the following weekend.

Emma Hayes made twos changes to the side that started our opening leg victory against Wolfsburg last Wednesday with Jess Carter and Erin Cuthbert replacing Niamh Charles and Ji in the starting 11.

Charles picked up her second yellow card of the knockout stages during the first leg which meant the youngster was ruled out for today’s clash and Hayes handed Carter her second Champions League start for the Blues.

Carter lined-up at right-back alongside Millie Bright, Magda Eriksson and left-back Jonna Andersson in a back four ahead of goalkeeper Ann Katrin-Berger.

Hayes opted for Scotland international Erin Cuthbert in the heart of the Chelsea midfield alongside Melanie Leupolz and Sophie Ingle.

Kirby and Harder lined-up slightly ahead of the Blues trio with in-form Kerr leading the line for the Blues.

Chelsea struggled to get a foot hold in the first half of our first leg against Wolfsburg, but it was the Blues who had the brighter start in today’s second leg.

Chelsea settled into the game much better than our German opponents with Kirby and Kerr looking lively in the opening minutes.

Our German opponents gradually came into the contest following a promising start from Chelsea and the Blues had Eriksson to thank for denying Wolfsburg an opener on 12 minutes.

The defender was in the right place at the right time to clear a looping cross off the line and what followed was a period of sustained pressure from Wolfsburg.

Last year’s finalist started to enjoy spells of possession, but the Blues did well to limit Wolfsburg to any clear-cut opportunities and looked to get joy from hitting a ball over the top to Kerr and Kirby in attack.

That tactic from the Blues would pay off after 27 minutes when a long-range pass from Harder got Kerr behind the Wolfsburg defence and Kerr was brought down by Doorsen-Khajeh as she raced into the box.

The referee pointed to the spot and Harder stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way and give Chelsea a 1-0 lead on 27 minutes.

Wolfsburg had the opportunity to respond almost immediately when Rolfo delivered a ball across the six-yard box but Pajor was unable to provide the finish.

Our opponents were made to rue that missed chance minutes later when great forward play from Kerr resulted in a second goal for the Blues.

The striker controlled a ball into the box from Bright before turning and firing low past the keeper to score her 20th goal of the season and give her side a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Hayes certainly would have been pleased at the break following her sides first-half performance, and she will have been happy with the start her side made following the interval.

The Blues would have been expecting an immediate response from Wolfsburg having gone into the break 2-0 down and Chelsea did well to deny our opponents from gaining any hopes of getting back into the tie early in the second half.

Carter, who was making her fourth start for the Blues this season, seemingly fitted in at right-back and struck up a good partnership with Bright who lined up alongside her in central defence.

The pair was on hand to provide well-timed tackles and blocks to prevent our opponents getting any joy down the left side, while Berger comfortably saved a curling free-kick from Dominque Janssen with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Hayes brought on Ji and Jessie Fleming for Cuthbert and Leupolz and the changes from the Blues boss had an immediate impact as Ji played in Kirby for our third goal with just nine minutes remaining.

Chelsea worked the ball to Ji and the midfielder threaded a pass to Kirby who took one touch out of her feet before supplying a low finish past Kiedrzynek to seal victory and complete an impressive performance from the Blues.

Today’s win secures a place in the Champions League semi-finals where the Blues will meet either Bayern Munich or Rosengard.

Prior to the first leg of our semi-final on 24/25 April, Chelsea will face Birmingham City at Kingsmeadow on Sunday as we look to maintain our position at the top of the WSL.

Several Blues will then report for international duty before returning for the start of our FA Cup campaign where we will face London City Lionesses at home on Sunday 18 April.
