Sam Kerr highlighted the quality throughout the Blues squad as a key factor in Chelsea FC Women’s 6-0 victory against Birmingham City.

The Australian netted a first-half hat-trick at Kingsmeadow on Sunday to help the team stay two points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Barclay’s FA Women’s Super League.

It took Chelsea until the 25th minute to break down Birmingham but the Blues then produced a ruthless performance to seal our sixth straight league victory.

Kerr’s first-half treble gave the Blues a 3-0 lead at the break before a second-half double from Fran Kirby and a goal from Guro Reiten secured another vital three points in the race for the title. Kerr believes Sunday’s win shows the strength of depth within the squad.

She said: ‘They [Birmingham] started well, we had to break them down and we knew they would come here and make it difficult for us.

‘After the first goal, the quality showed through and even after all the substitutes you have seen what a deep squad we have.

‘It was clinical, and everyone had a really good performance. We made a lot of substitutions and the quality didn’t drop off. It was a real professional performance.’

Kerr boasts an impressive goalscoring record having netted 24 times in 37 appearances for the Blues and the Australian's fine form in front of goal this season has seen her climb to the top of the WSL scoring charts.

The striker is now the WSL’s joint-leading goal scorer with 17 goals and has a real chance of winning the FA WSL Golden Boot with just three league fixtures remaining, but Kerr says her focus is on helping the team rather than securing individual honours.

She added: ‘There are a few people who are pretty close at the moment. It feels good that I’m contributing to the team and I’m focusing on game by game.

‘That’s my job to score goals so I don’t look at those things, I just worry about where we are sitting in the table so at the moment it’s pretty good.’
