Christian Pulisic on why getting back on form with back-to-back wins over Porto and Crystal Palace was such an important step.

Having already taken a two-goal lead in the first leg of our Champions League quarter-final with the Portuguese champions earlier in the week, we followed that up with a resounding win in the Premier League at Selhurst Park.

In stark contrast to the disappointing way the previous week ended, with a shock defeat to West Bromwich Albion, it was all smiles for the Blues as we raced into an early lead at Palace an didn’t look back, with Pulisic finding the net twice in a 4-1 victory.

‘We had an incredible start, that’s really what set the tone for the game,’ said the American. ‘As soon as we lost the ball we were just on it today winning it back and we were able to dominate that first half.

‘The first 20 or 30 minutes felt really strong from us, it felt like we were all over them, as soon as we lost it we were getting it back, playing really aggressively with a really intense start.

‘We lost just a little bit of that intensity at the start of the second half and that allowed them to get back into the game a little bit, but in the end we finished strong.’

With a big European win under our belts and back to winning ways in emphatic style in the Premier League, Pulisic felt it was the perfect response to the previous week’s disappointment, in what could turn out to be a massive few days for our season.

‘I’m feeling really confident, I’m feeling very good with the team as well. It was a big response from the last Premier League game as well.

‘We’re not going to win every game and we had a tough game against West Brom for sure. We didn’t play to our usual standard, but that’s going to happen and we were able to respond well.

‘The way we responded this week and got the results, we’re definitely happy.’

Despite that setback, the three points well earned against Crystal Palace mean we are still very much in the frame for top-four finish in the Premier League. Having had to battle to the end of last season to reach that goal, our number 10 is expecting a tight race again this time around.

‘It was tough last season, you have to battle if you want pick up results and finish in that top four,’ added Pulisic.

‘It’s going to be tight I think. We need to put some good results together for sure, so we take every game seriously, go game by game. That’s our strategy for now so we’re ready for the challenge.’
