Drew Spence bagged a brace in our 5-0 victory against London City Lionesses on Friday as Chelsea booked our place in the fifth round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup and our longest-serving player was delighted to be back amongst the goals.

The midfielder has now netted 47 goals in 210 appearances for the club and she was subject to high praise from Blues boss Emma Hayes following Friday’s fourth-round victory.

Speaking in Friday’s post-match press conference, Hayes said, ‘I thought Drew was outstanding throughout,’ and although Spence was critical of her own performance, the No.24 was pleased to contribute with two goals.

She said: ‘I’m happy with the goals but I thought I could have played a bit better.

‘It’s been a tough season for me personally so I’m happy to get more minutes under my belt and finally get on the scoresheet this year so I’m happy with that.’

Back in December, Spence became the first player in the modern era of Chelsea FC Women to reach 200 appearances and her honours list is just as impressive.

While she boasts many trophies and winners medals during her 12-year career with Chelsea, on Friday evening she was joined on the field by Charlotte Wardlaw, Aggie Beever-Jones and Jorja Fox who have a combined total of five appearances for the club. Speaking at full-time, the 28-year-old applauded the young Blues.

She said: ‘The youngsters train with us every day, they know the standards that we have to put in. Credit to them, I thought they were fantastic, and it was a good 5-0 win.

‘I think sometimes in the past we’ve struggled with these games, where we might have taken our foot off a little bit,’ added Spence.

‘This time, coming back from an international break it was important for us. We knew they was going to come with a low block, and they did that, so it was important for us to get the first goal and keep pushing and we did that.’

Spence and the Blues will now prepare for a week that could ultimately define our season and it begins with a trip to Manchester City on Wednesday for a game that many will dub as a title decider.

Chelsea will then head to Germany for the first leg of our Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich next Sunday and Spence is eagerly anticipating the closing stages of our 2020/21 campaign.

‘This is what we live for,’ she said. ‘It’s the business end of the season and we’ve put in so much graft throughout the year.

‘We are in every competition, so we are excited and really looking forward to it.’
