Chelsea Women secured a 5-0 win on the final day of the season against Reading to secure back-to-back Barclays FA Women’s Super League titles.

A brace from Fran Kirby and goals from Melanie Leupolz, Sam Kerr and Erin Cuthbert helped the Blues secure all three points at Kingsmeadow to clinch the WSL title.

Chelsea certainly deserved to be crowned champions. Emma Hayes’ side have consistently delivered high-level performances, displayed resilience and character when it mattered most and produced moments of sublime brilliance.

The combination of Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby has at times been unplayable, while the Blues defence have kept 12 clean sheets and Ann-Katrin Berger’s finger-tip save to deny Lauren Hemp a late winner in our top of the table showdown with Manchester City will certainly be a contender for save of the season.

While today’s win will go down as the game that clinched the title for a second successive year, we look back on some of the best moments in our title-winning campaign…

Chelsea 9-0 Bristol City – 13 September 2020

Nine goals from nine different goalscorers was a resounding way for the Blues to record our first Barclays Women’s Super League victory of the season.

Fran Kirby got the ball rolling and Maren Mjelde doubled our advantage from the penalty spot before Melanie Leupolz added a third with her first goal for the club.

The German midfield was then joined on the scoresheet by Millie Bright and Erin Cuthbert to make it 5-0 at half-time.

Bethany England turned home from close range in the second half and then substitutes Niamh Charles and Pernille Harder joined Leupolz in scoring their maiden goals for the club.

Chelsea 3-1 Manchester City – 11 October 2020

The Blues struck an early blow in the Barclays Women’s Super League title race, as goals from Maren Mjelde, Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby settled a pulsating top-of-the-table clash at Kingsmeadow.

Games between two of English football’s heavyweight side rarely disappoint, and this one certainly didn’t. Mjelde marked her 50th WSL appearance in style as she slotted home a penalty and 10 minutes into the second half Kerr made no mistake from a low cross from Kirby, slotting home our second.

A rare City attack resulted in a penalty that Chloe Kelly converted with 20 minutes to go but a superb counter-attack saw Kirby beat Ellie Roebuck to the ball and the striker slotted into an empty net to secure the three points.

Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea – 15 November 2020

A last-gasp own goal rescued a point for the Blues from this top-of-the-table clash, extending our long unbeaten run in the WSL to 27 matches.

With four minutes remaining, Vivianne Miedema broke clear down the left-hand side and centred for Beth Mead to score what looked to be the winning goal from close range.

As our 26-game unbeaten run would suggest, Chelsea Women is a team that never knows when it is beaten, although our equaliser owed plenty of good fortune.

Harder found half a yard of space near the right byline and attempted to whip over a cross, but the ball spooned up off the boot of sliding Lotte Wubbon-Moy and sailed into the far corner to earn Chelsea a last-gasp equaliser.

Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United – 17 January 2021

The Blues equalled the record for the longest unbeaten streak in WSL history and leapfrogged Manchester United at the top of the table.

Pernille Harder made our attacking dominance pay after half an hour when Harder bundled the ball home at the end of a penalty-box scramble.

Lauren James, whose brother Reece stars for our men’s team, came off the bench to net a equaliser for Manchester United only five minutes after coming on.

The response from the Blues is exactly what one would expect from the champions. Fran Kirby latched on to a long punt up field by Ann-Katrin Berger and executed an exceptional finish to give her side all three points.

Aston Villa 0-4 Chelsea – 27 January 2021

The Blues set a new Barclays FA Women’s Super League record for the longest unbeaten run, as a dominant display against Aston Villa was rewarded with a victory that sent us back to the top of the table.

Goals from Sam Kerr, Bethany England, Pernille Harder and Magda Eriksson secured a 4-0 win in the Midlands and extended our unbeaten run in the WSL to 32 matches, surpassing the record we shared with Manchester City.

Chelsea 3-0 Arsenal – 10 February 2021

After our only defeat of the season to Brighton, the Blues bounced back in impressive style with a 3-0 win over London rivals Arsenal.

Pernille Harder opened the scoring minutes after the re-start and our No.23 scored her 11th goal of the campaign seven minutes later.

Fran Kirby then added a third for the Blues with a breakaway goal in the last minute and the victory took us three points clear of Manchester United at the top of the WSL standings, with both sides having played 14 matches.

Manchester City 2-2 Chelsea – 21 April 2021

Chelsea took a huge step towards securing back-to-back Barclay’s FA Women’s Super League titles after a 2-2 draw at Manchester City.

Many dubbed the fixture at The Academy Stadium as the title decider and goals from Sam Kerr and Pernille Harder helped the Blues secure a vital point to keep Chelsea two points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the league with two WSL game remaining.

Chelsea 5-0 Reading – 9 May 2021

The Blues went into the final game of the season knowing a victory would seal the title and we got off to the perfect start at Kingsmeadow.

Jess Carter picked out Melanie Leupolz from a corner and the German international executed a first-time strike to perfection to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes played.

As they’ve done so often this season, Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby combined once again to create another goal for Chelsea.

Kirby slipped the ball into Kerr and the Australian returned the pass into the path for Kirby to provide a first-time finish into the top corner and give the Blues a two-goal cushion.

The duo were involved once again as Chelsea made it three just before the hour mark as Kerr fed the ball to Kirby and the No.14 took one touch before directing a thunderous drive beyond Reading goalkeeper Grace Moloney.

Kerr then got herself on the scoresheet which her performance certainly merited and of course it was Kirby with the assist. A delightful chip from Kirby to find Kerr, and the No.20 volleyed home her 21st goal of the league and seal the WSL Golden Boot.

Substitute Erin Cuthbert netted with 15 minutes to go as Moloney palmed Kerr’s header into the path of the scot and she bundled the ball over the line to make it five and complete the scoring on a title-winning day for Chelsea.
