Billy Gilmour has been named in the senior Scotland squad for the first time for this summer's European Championships, while N'Golo Kante, Kurt Zouma and Olivier Giroud are in Didier Deschamps' France squad.

Gilmour has been selected by former Chelsea player and assistant manager Steve Clarke. The midfielder has been a regular in the Scotland Under-21 set-up in recent years but this is his maiden senior call-up.

Scotland are in the same group at Euro 2020 as England, Croatia and Czech Republic. Their first game is against the Czechs at Hampden Park on 14 June in what is their first major tournament appearance since 1998.

Our French trio have all been named in their squad for the tournament they reached the final of in 2016. For Giroud and Kante, they will be hoping to follow up the World Cup triumph three years ago with a European Championships victory, just as Les Bleus did at the beginning of the century.

It is Zouma's first call-up for an international tournament and recognition for excellent performances at club level since returning to Chelsea from loan spells in 2019.

The return of Karim Benzema to the international fold after five years was the major talking point from Deschamps' selection, with France in a tricky group alongside Portugal, Germany and Hungary. They start against the Germans in Munich on 15 June.

Earlier this week Mateo Kovacic was called up by Croatia, and Michy Batshuayi, who spent the season on loan at Crystal Palace, by Belgium.

Croatia, World Cup finalists in 2018, meet England in their first game at Wembley before playing Czech Republic and Scotland at Hampden Park. Belgium have games against Russia, Denmark and Finland to look forward to.

For this summer's tournament there has been an increase to 26 players per squad as opposed to the usual 23 as a result of the pandemic.
