Thomas Tuchel sat down with Josh Denzel for the latest in Three’s Connect With… series, sharing how he takes his mind off work away from football and what it would mean to lift the Champions League trophy with Chelsea.
The series with Three provides some insight into the Blues’ lives and interests away from the pitch, with Mason Mount, Olivier Giroud and Bethany England just some of the players who have shared their stories so far, before the men's head coach took his turn.
Before talk turned to his life away from football, the German shared his memories of what it feels like to win silverware as a manager, and explained why even winning this Saturday’s Champions League final won’t change his hunger for victory.
‘When I first won a big trophy in Germany, the cup with Dortmund, it didn’t change too much,’ said Tuchel. ‘The next day we had a parade through the city, then suddenly it was clear to me in this moment what it means to the people. I was so happy for them and it was so satisfying to know they all wanted it so bad and to give it to them.
‘But a week later, it was back to work. It’s the same now. I think and I hope it will not have an immense influence if we win this biggest trophy that is there to win. We will get super excited if we do it, but already I am sure that in the first friendly match for next season I will be 100 per cent back on for winning and it will not change my approach.’
He also discussed how time at home with his family helps him to take his mind off football and relax.
‘It’s easy to bring your work home, to get lost in it. My kids actually thought for many, many years that the TV was only there for football. They were very surprised after many years when there were some cartoons on there.
‘But actually, to be with the kids is a huge help, to just to do normal stuff, go in the garden, play frisbee, go play tennis with them, drive them to school. It’s a pretty calm life that I try to live outside of football.’
