Football, and sports in general, can play an important role in the global fight against antisemitism. Earlier this year, the Premier League became the first sports league in the world to adopt the IHRA definition. The Premier League followed Chelsea Football Club, who were the first club in the world to adopt the definition, a milestone in the club’s now four-year campaign against antisemitism.

The ADL, which was founded in 1913, is a leading anti-hate organisation in the US and has been delivering anti-bias education session in schools across the UK for a number of years with great success.

More recently, ADL and Chelsea Foundation formed a partnership which aims to leverage best practices from the US and UK to introduce projects and initiatives which can further utilise the power of sports in tackling antisemitism. The recently announced extended three-year partnership between the ADL and Chelsea Foundation is funded by club owner Roman Abramovich and will focus on education, technology development to better address online abuse as well as advocacy.

As part of this partnership, ADL’s successful campaign, ‘No Place for Hate’ was introduced in selected schools across the UK last year in partnership with the club’s Foundation. The ADL are currently using best practices from Chelsea’s UK programme to encourage US sports to introduce similar programmes to battle antisemitism. Chelsea also recently announced a new approach to combating online abuse, building on ADL’s experience in this field, primarily through the Centre on Extremism.The rescheduled webinar will now be at 5pm (UK) on Wednesday 16 June with Lord John Mann, Chelsea’s Chairman, Bruce Buck and Head of Special Projects, Rola Brentlin. ADL’s CEO Jonathan Greenblatt and Sharon Nazarian, Senior Vice President of International Affairs also join the line-up.
