Thiago Silva and his national side took another step towards retaining the Copa America thanks to a narrow victory over Chile.

The Chelsea defender, who won the trophy two years ago, helped keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 quarter-final win that was achieved despite Brazil playing with only 10 men for nearly half the game. The goal came a minute into the second half, scored by Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta with his first touch having come on at half-time for Roberto Firmino. Only two minutes later, Gabriel Jesus was sent off for a dangerously high challenge.Chile went on to hit the bar and draw a good save from Ederson, but Thiago Silva and his colleagues largely stayed solid and saw out the win despite their opponents having five shots on target, the most allowed by the Selecao in two Copa America tournaments.

For Brazil, Neymar came closest to adding to their lead with a shot well saved by Claudio Bravo, who also dealt with efforts from Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus in the first half, as did Ederson in the Brazil goal when tested by Sebastian Vegas and Eduardo Vargas in that scoreless opening 45 minutes. Thanks to their strike in the second period, Brazil, who are hosting the tournament, will now play Peru on Monday. The other semi-final is between the winners of Uruguay vs Colombia and Argentina vs Ecuador.
