Sam Kerr netted a double for Australia, but it was not enough as Sweden come away with a 4-2 victory.

Jessie Fleming’s Canada got their first victory on the board and Team GB made it two wins from two, while Aniek Nouwen and her Netherlands team-mates had to settle for a point in an entertaining 3-3 draw with Brazil.

Chile 1-2 Canada

Fleming started her second game of the tournament with the Blues No.17 named in midfield for Canada’s fixture against Chile.

With 20 minutes played, Fleming’s side had a chance to take the lead after they were awarded a penalty, but Manchester City’s Janine Beckie hit the post from 12 yards out.

Beckie made up for her penalty miss in the latter stages of the first half when she smashed home from inside the box to put Canada ahead.

Two minutes into the second half, Canada doubled their lead with Beckie scoring her second goal of the game.

Chile halved the deficit from the penalty spot just before the hour mark, but Canada held on to get their first victory of the tournament and put them in a strong position going into their final group fixture against Team GB on Tuesday.

Sweden 4-2 Australia

Magda Eriksson returned to the Sweden starting 11 having missed Wednesday’s 3-0 victory over the USA. The Chelsea skipper joined Jonna Andersson in the Sweden backline who were up against the threat of Blues team-mate Kerr.

It was Sweden who dealt the first blow when they took the lead on 20 minutes through Fridolina Rolfo.

Kerr netted in Australia’s 2-1 victory against New Zealand on Wednesday, and she was at it again. The Blues striker got in behind her marker and headed past former Blues goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl to equalise for Australia 10 minutes before the half-time break.

Minutes into the second half and Kerr struck again. The Matildas captain got free in the box and headed in from close-range to give her side a 2-1 lead.

Australia’s lead did not last long though as Sweden levelled through Lina Hurtig on 52 minutes and five minutes later Sweden took a 3-2 lead with Rolfo getting her second goal of the game.

Kerr had the opportunity to equalise moments later when Australia were awarded a penalty, but the Blues striker saw her spot-kick saved by Lindahl.

Australia were made to rue the missed opportunity as Sweden extended their lead with 10 minutes remaining to secure the victory and seal their place in the quarter-finals.

Japan 0-1 Team GB

Sophie Ingle was handed her first start of the tournament and become the first Welsh international to start for Team GB, with Carly Telford, Millie Bright and Niamh Charles named on the bench.

Kirby missed Great Britain’s opening day victory against Chile due to a knock picked up in training and the Blues forward failed to recover for the clash with Japan.

It was a cagey affair with neither side able to break the deadlock in the first half and with just over half an hour remaining Ingle made way for Caroline Weir.

Team GB finally got the breakthrough deep into the second half, and it was Ellen White who headed her side ahead with 15 minutes remaining to book a place in the quarter-finals.

Netherlands 3-3 Brazil

Nouwen lined up in central defence once again for the Netherlands and within three minutes her side took a 1-0 lead with Arsenal’s striker Vivianne Miedema the scorer.

Brazil got back on level terms less than 15 minutes later but Miedema was back on the scoresheet in the second half to give the Netherlands a 2-1 lead on the hour mark.

That lead lasted just five minutes as Marta netted from the spot and it got even better for Brazil when they took a 3-2 lead moments later.

The Netherlands netted an equaliser to make it 3-3 with 10 minutes to go, but neither side could find a winner and had to settle for a point each.

With four points on the board, Nouwen and the Netherlands look likely to progress to the quarter-finals.
