Maatsen heads on loan to the Championship

Ian Maatsen will play on loan in the Championship at Coventry City next season.

The teenage defender enjoyed an impressive maiden campaign in senior football in 2020/21, making 35 appearances for Charlton Athletic in League One as the Addicks narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs.

His versatility was lauded, initially under Lee Bowyer and then Nigel Adkins, as he featured in various positions from midfield to right-wing, as well as his customary left full-back role.

It was in that spot Maatsen thrived during two years playing for our Academy teams after joining from PSV Eindhoven in his native Netherlands in the summer of 2018, catching the eye both with his attacking intent and defensive solidity.

He cemented a place at the back for our development squad in 2019/20, even captaining the team on several occasions, and scored in the FA Youth Cup as we thrashed Wolves 7-0. Earlier that season, he made his senior debut aged 17 as a substitute in our Carabao Cup victory over Grimsby Town and signed a new four-year contract on his 18th birthday a year later.

While on loan in south London last term, Maatsen quickly became popular among Charlton supporters and was a regular in the side. He scored his first professional goal against Doncaster Rovers in April while playing as a right winger, though two draws in the final four games of the season saw the Addicks miss out on a shot at promotion.

The Dutchman now swaps the Valley for the Midlands to join Coventry, who finished six places and 12 points clear of danger in their first season back in the Championship last term.
