Ferdinand backs Blues for title
Rio Ferdinand believes Chelsea can compete with Manchester City for the Premier League after our UEFA Super Cup win last night against Villarreal.
Speaking on BT Sport, the former Manchester United defender praised the Blues’ winning mentality ahead of the 2021/22 Premier League season.
‘The big difference for them this season is what’s expected of them now,’ he said. ‘There wasn’t an expectancy, there is now because they’ve got their hands on the Champions League and now this.
‘This winning mentality we’ve been talking about, you can see it’s in the building.’
Ferdinand also praised the unity in the side as the squad celebrated together after the penalty shoot-out.
‘There’s a real good sense of brotherhood within the squad,’ Ferdinand added. ‘This team now is expected to compete for the Premier League and all the other big trophies.’
Gilmour on Norwich move
Blues midfielder Billy Gilmour has opened up on why he chose to move to Norwich City on loan this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the 20-year-old revealed his desire to get more experience in the Premier League and ready himself for a return to Stamford Bridge.
‘I had some options but for me, Norwich was the first choice,’ he said. ‘I came here, spoke to the boss, and everything he said sounded really good.
‘The way he wants to play, the way he sees me fitting in. That was what made my choice easier to come to Norwich.’
Gilmour had a fantastic summer as he won the Champions League and got picked to represent Scotland at Euro 2020. He is looking to get sharper and further develop as a Premier League player.
‘Chelsea are in contact, they will watch games and send me highlights, looking at what I can do better,’ he added. ‘That is the aim. Have a really good season here with Norwich, go back to Chelsea and see what happens.’
Moreno praises Chelsea
Villarreal attacker Gerard Moreno has labelled Chelsea the best team in the world after our UEFA Super Cup win over his side last night in Belfast.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the Spain international added that it’s important for his side to be proud of their performance against the Blues.
‘It wasn’t possible but today is a day to be proud,’ he said. ‘Of the teams, of the fans, of what the club is, of what the people are.
‘We are now competing with the best.’
Kepa Arrizabalaga came on as a last-minute substitute in extra time to save two penalties to make the Blues the UEFA Super Cup champions for the second time.
‘Chelsea were the favourites,’ Moreno added. ‘But for me, they are the best team in the world.’
