The transfer window has now closed in England and most of Europe’s top leagues, and here we summarise all of Chelsea’s summer activity.

Deadline day in England, Germany, Spain, France and Italy was on Tuesday, while the windows in Russia, Turkey and Portugal shut later this month. Here we list all the comings and goings for our professional players...

Romelu returns and Saul gets the call

The signature signing of the summer for the Blues was the return to Stamford Bridge of Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian signed a five-year deal and immediately impressed on his second debut at Arsenal.

On deadline day we secured the loan signing of Saul Niguez, the experienced Spanish midfielder, from Atletico Madrid. There is an option for a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

Back-up Bettinelli

Earlier in the window, Marcus Bettinelli joined our goalkeeping department having been out of contract at Fulham.

Permanent departures

Bettinelli replaced Willy Caballero, who was released, as was another goalkeeper, Jamal Blackman. They remain free agents.

Olivier Giroud and Fikayo Tomori both signed for AC Milan, with Victor Moses joining Spartak Moscow and Marc Guehi moving to Crystal Palace. Another Academy graduate, Tammy Abraham, completed a permanent transfer to Roma, and Davide Zappacosta has also gone to Serie A and his former club Atalanta.

Kurt Zouma moved across London after seven-and-a-half years at Chelsea, joining West Ham, and Ike Ugbo is now a Genk player.

Marco van Ginkel returned to PSV, Danilo Pantic departed to Partizan Belgrade, and two youngsters, Dynel Simeu and Tino Livramento, made the switch to Southampton.

Youngsters Marcel Lewis, Jonathan Russell, Jack Wakely and Pierre Ekwah Elimby were all released, as was Izzy Brown. Lewis has since joined Union St-Gilloise, Russell Huddersfield, Wakely Wycombe, Ekwah Elimby West Ham, while Brown headed to Preston.

We also said farewell to Lewis Bate (Leeds), Luke McCormick (AFC Wimbledon), Myles Peart-Harris (Brentford) and Charlie Wiggett (Newcastle).

Loans

A number of players have departed on loan. Jake Clarke-Salter0 (Crystal Palace), Armando Broja (Southampton) and Billy Gilmour (Norwich) have stayed in the Premier League to continue their development, while there are eight Blues plying their trade in the Championship in 2021/22: Nathan Baxter (Hull), Juan Castillo (Birmingham), Levi Colwill (Huddersfield), Dujon Sterling (Blackpool), Danny Drinkwater and Baba Rahman (both Reading), and Jake Clarke-Salter and Ian Maatsen (both Coventry).

Jamie Cumming is at Gillingham for the season and Henry Lawrence joined AFC Wimbledon, also in League One.

Heading overseas, Emerson Palmieri made the temporary switch to Lyon, Michy Batshuayi is with Besiktas, and Tiemoue Bakayoko agreed a two-year loan deal with AC Milan. Matt Miazga will spend the season in Spain with Alaves, Kenedy back in his native Brazil at Flamengo, and young keeper Karlo Ziger is with Rudar Velenje in Slovenia.

On deadline day Thierno Ballo joined Rapid Vienna for his first loan, and Ethan Ampadu headed to Venezia in Serie A.
