Ben Chilwell has replaced Reece James in the England squad ahead of the Three Lions’ World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

James picked up an ankle injury against Manchester City 10 days ago, and Thomas Tuchel reported in his press conference on Friday there was no chance the right-back could join up with England as he continues his recovery from injury.

Chilwell, who was not named in the September England squad, has been called up in James’ place and will hope to get his first minutes for the Three Lions since March.

[Tammy Abraham], who joined Roma from Chelsea in August, is also added to the Three Lions squad.

‘For him it would be nice to be selected,’ said Tuchel about Chilwell on the eve of the Southampton game, when he started in the league for the first time this season and subsequently scored.

‘He had a bit of a rough start [this season], he was a bit unlucky. He has his own story like every player. I understand and for sure Chilly understands he has to earn it with minutes. He did not have too many minutes. We can understand why he wasn’t selected. It’s not a big drama and there is no need to worry.

‘Once he plays more minutes for us and plays with quality, he will have the chance to be selected.’

England travel to Andorra on Saturday before hosting Hungary on Tuesday. They are top of Group I with 16 points from their six games so far.
