Magda Eriksson outlined her ambitions to win the Champions League this season but insisted all the focus is on this evening’s opening group stage fixture against Wolfsburg.

Chelsea reached the Champions League final for the first time in our history last season and the Blues begin this year’s European journey against German side Wolfsburg at Kingsmeadow.

Eriksson believes the Blues have the quality in the squad to have another successful Champions League campaign but has first targeted victory against Wolfsburg tonight.

She said: ‘Our ambitions have always been to reach the final and win the Champions League. We know we have the quality in our squad to win it, so that is the goal this year.

‘It’s fuel for us, we know we have the quality to reach a final, we did it last year. We know we can play better than we did in that final so we are going to do everything we can to reach that stage but it’s early days now. It’s the first game of the group stage so we are focused on that.

‘We are familiar with Wolfsburg now. We’ve played them a couple of times and they are going to be a tough opponent. Looking at the ranking it’s the toughest in our group so it would be great to start with a win.’

From this season, the Women’s Champions League is following a new format with the introduction of a group stage and Eriksson is delighted with the new structure of the competition and feels it will be a huge benefit for the women’s game.

‘It’s fantastic. It’s a great change,’ said Eriksson. ‘I’m really excited to watch the games and to play the games. It’s great for women’s football. There will be more high-quality games, and everything is also broadcasted which is really good.

‘You know you are going to have six games in the Champions League. You are going to play against great opponents, and you get a chance to see where your team is at, what you can improve and how you compare to other leagues.

‘It’s amazing that we get to go into this group stage in the Champions League, a historical moment for women’s football, and we get to do that together with our amazing fans.

‘I’m getting chills just talking about it now, so I’m really excited.’
