Emma Hayes hailed her sides fighting spirit after Chelsea Women fought back from 3-1 down to earn a point in our opening Champions League group stage clash with Wolfsburg.

The Blues took an early lead at Kingsmeadow through Sam Kerr, but our opponents responded with two first-half goals and extended their lead just after the break.

Bethany England pulled one back for Chelsea before former Wolfsburg captain Pernille Harder scored a last-gasp equaliser. Blues boss Hayes believes there was plenty of positives to take from the game.

She said: ‘Never have we played a Wolfsburg side where we’ve had 10 corners to their zero or 33 entries into their penalty box to their 17. We had 62 per cent possession, 17 chances and were dominant in all of the attacking stats.

‘Every time we’ve played Wolfsburg, I don’t think we’ve dominated those areas as much as we have done. It’s not tactical problems, there were errors for all three goals.

‘We’ve seen our team be able to score goals, but we shouldn’t have to score three goals every game. We were 3-1 down, it’s a point gained and I’m going to focus on that.’

It was Harder’s dramatic leveller in stoppage time which completed the comeback. Hayes praised the forward's performance against her former club.

‘Pernille has found a home in this team,’ she said. ‘She has really settled and her role in the team is very defined and pronounced. I’m not surprised she got that late equaliser.

‘The belief was always there amongst the team that we can score goals. I’m going to focus on that part of our game tonight.’

Wednesday evening also saw the return of our fans for Champions League nights under the lights at Kingsmeadow and Hayes highlighted the supporters' belief in the team.

‘Our fans were amazing. They never gave up on the team and the team never gave up on them.’

Hayes and her side will now prepare for Sunday’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League meeting with Leicester City at Kingsmeadow. The clash kicks-off at 12.30pm and tickets for the game can be purchased here
