Christensen has been a steady presence in our defence over the past five seasons but the defender’s well-taken volley against the Swedish side after nine minutes was a huge cause for celebration as he finally got on the scoresheet in his 137th match for the Blues.

While it has been a very long wait for the Dane’s elusive first goal, a number of other popular Chelsea players have also kept us waiting for a while before they notched their first goals for the Blues.

Albert Ferrer

The first Spaniard to play for Chelsea, Ferrer only scored once in 113 appearances although it’s surprising he didn’t get more if you watch the precision of his strike against Hertha Berlin in the Champions League in November 1999. Playing his 58th game for the Blues, ‘Chapi’ ran on to a flighted pass by Dennis Wise and brought the ball under control with a deft touch before rifling home an unstoppable effort with his right boot to put us 2-0 up against the German side.

Claude Makelele

With Makelele’s excellence as a defensive midfielder being a key factor in our first league title for 50 years in 2004/05, it was clear who Blues fans wanted to see taking the penalty awarded to us in stoppage time in our final home match of the season against Charlton Athletic. The Frenchman initially fluffed his lines with a weak attempt which was saved but he followed up and buried the reboard, sparking bedlam at the Bridge as we celebrated his first goal in 96 games for the Blues.

Paulo Ferreira

With Chelsea a goal down against Colchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup in February 2006, Ferreira picked the right moment to notch his first Blues goal in his 62nd game. Lurking near the far post on a corner kick, the Portuguese full-back found himself in the right place when the ball was knocked down in his direction as he deftly flicked it home to spark a 3-1 comeback win.

Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole’s first Chelsea goal arrived in his 67th game after his move from Arsenal. With the Blues leading 3-0 at West Ham in March 2008 but down to 10 men after Frank Lampard had been controversially sent off (a decision which was later overturned), the left-back helped emphasise our dominance at Upton Park by jumping up to join a counter-attack and turning the ball in from a tight-angle after Joe Cole’s effort had been parried by Rob Green.

Cesar Azplicueta

Azpi’s first Chelsea goal which give us the lead in a 2-0 League Cup win at Arsenal in October 2013 showcased the future Blues captain’s hard-working nature and fine reading of the game. In less than 20 seconds, the Spaniard went from defending a corner in his own box to sprinting upfield to join the counter-attack, pouncing after Carl Jenkinson had undercooked his back-header to goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski to flick home on his 55th appearance for the Blues.

Mateo Kovacic

After failing to score while on loan from Real Madrid in 2018/19, Kovacic joined the Blues permanently in the summer of 2019 and repaid our faith with a fine campaign in which he was named the club’s Player of the Year. He also notched his first Blues goal on his 71st appearance in a Champions League match at Valencia as he gathered a loose ball just outside the box and fired a precise low shot from 20 metres into the bottom corner in a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
