Chalobah ‘excited and grateful’ to sign new deal

Exclusive: Trevoh Chalobah on why he signed his new Chelsea contract!

Trevoh Chalobah describes the emotions he feels after putting pen to paper on a new long-term contract with his boyhood club in an exclusive interview, which you can watch above.

The centre-back, who progressed through the ranks in our Academy and honed his talents on loan before breaking into the first-team set-up at Chelsea this season, explains why this moment means so much to him.

However, he also underlines the fact he is still developing and is determined to continue going from strength to strength at Stamford Bridge after signing his new deal.

‘I’m really excited and grateful to sign for this club, my boyhood club,’ says Chalobah. ‘I’ve been here since I was nine years old and to have the opportunity to sign a new deal, it’s an exciting moment for me.

‘From being here so young, coming to be ball boy, watching the players and Champions League nights. To then be in the team, winning a lot of games and the start we’ve had, it’s been amazing.

‘I think for me the next thing is just getting as many games as I can and not stopping and not relaxing. I think that’s the worst thing, for me, for a player to sign a new deal and just to take their foot off the gas. I want to go further because I believe I can.’

He will continue that development under the watchful eye of Thomas Tuchel, and the 22-year-old revealed the simple piece of advice he received from our head coach, as well as the big influence two of our more experienced defenders have had on him.

‘The manager’s always told me to just enjoy it. It’s the same thing as when you’re playing when you’re eight years old, just enjoy the football, enjoy the moment and work hard and believe in yourself.

‘When I first came Rudiger was the one that looked after me, he always believed in me as well. It’s nice to be playing with him, he’s always talking to me. He’s always giving me harsh words as well, but it’s needed for a young player like me, that’s how I’m going to develop.

‘Obviously to play with Thiago, he’s one of the best centre-backs in the world I think and I’ve always looked up to him from when I was younger as well. To then share the changing room, share the pitch with him, it’s amazing.

‘It’s good to learn from players like those two who have played a lot of games in football.’
