There was celebration for the Selecao in Sao Paulo as Brazil secured their spot at the 2022 World Cup.

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva captained the five-times world champions and lined up alongside Marquinhos as they secured a ninth clean sheet in 12 matches during the qualifying campaign. Colombia were the visitors, battling for their own place at the final tournament in Qatar next winter.

Chances came and went in a first half that lacked rhythm, with Brazil going closest when Danilo’s cross was turned against the woodwork by a visiting defender. Marquinhos also spurned a great opportunity when rising unmarked to meet a Neymar corner but couldn’t hit the target.

Colombia threatened too, keeping our 37-year-old centre-half on his toes, but it was Brazil who found the only goal of the game 18 minutes from time as Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta finished a lovely move to seal the three points.

The victory takes Brazil nine points clear at the top of the South American qualifying group, with a visit to second-placed Argentina up next.
