Welcoming the Year of the Tiger

With next week marking the start of the Lunar New Year, Chelsea Football Club is getting into the spirit of the occasion with a series of activities and displays at Stamford Bridge ahead of this weekend’s derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

Special pre-match top

To celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Tiger, the Blues will don a Lunar New Year-edition pre-match top when we warm-up on the pitch before the game.

In addition to the branding of our club partners Nike and Trivago, these special tops also feature a unique illustration of a tiger’s head utilising a traditional Chinese paper-cutting technique widely seen during the Lunar New Year festivities. The symbols and elements in the illustration are meant to channel the champion spirit of the tiger, convey the feelings of pride and confidence and bring good luck for the new year.

These tops feature the names of our players printed in Mandarin text on the back and will also be worn by our women’s team for the WSL match against Manchester City at Kingsmeadow on 6 February.

For supporters who would like to purchase these special Lunar New Year-edition pre-match tops, a limited number will be available for sale at the Stamford Bridge Megastore and on our official online store from Friday 21 January onwards.

Stadium activities

The players are not the only ones who will be dressed for the occasion this weekend as our mascots Stamford and Bridget will also wear specially designed Lunar New Year costumes and wave flags emblazoned with the tiger’s head illustration while they engage with fans at the game.

The club will send out seasonal greetings to our fans on the LED perimeter boards during the match and supporters will be entertained with traditional dragon dance and lion dance displays before they enter the stadium.

Fans attending the match will also get the chance to take part in a special scratch card contest which offers several great prizes including Chelsea FC home shirts signed by the players and copies of EA Sports’ FIFA 22 video game.

Chinese cuisine on offer

To get a sense for the flavour of the Lunar New Year, fans attending the match against Spurs will also be able to savour some specially prepared Chinese and Asian fusion dishes.

Among the options which will be available for fans to pre-order on our official food and beverage app, CFC Express, are steamed dim sum, Irn-Bru sweet and sour chicken, Peking duck wrap and Chinese chicken burgers.

Chinese cuisine will also be on offer at those games to our hospitality guests at the Champions Club, the Canoville Suite, Westview and the executive boxes.

We hope you enjoy our Lunar New Year celebrations and will continue to keep the blue flag flying high during the Year of the Tiger!
