Tariq Uwakwe has today signed for Crewe Alexandra on a permanent deal.

The midfielder previously spent the 2020/21 season on loan in League One with Accrington Stanley and now returns to the third tier following 14 years as a Chelsea player, having initially joined our Academy as an Under-9.

During his time in Lancashire, Uwakwe utilised his versatility and played a number of roles, including left wing-back, as he made 21 appearances in his first experience of senior football.

The 22-year-old also scored four goals, all of which came in his first two games for Accrington, including a hat-trick on his debut in the EFL Trophy.

Since then, he has featured for our development squad and netted an important goal for the young Blues away at Forest Green back in November, again in the EFL Trophy.

In his earlier days in the Academy, Uwakwe helped our Under-18s to a domestic treble of trophies in 2017/18 and also won the Toulon Tournament with England, who he has represented up to Under-19 level.

He joins a Crewe side currently fighting the threat of relegation two places and six points from safety. We wish Tariq well for the future and thank him for his contributions at Chelsea.
