Aniek Nouwen says she was pleased with the defensive performance after Chelsea FC Women beat Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday.

The win moves the Blues just two points behind table-toppers Arsenal in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and the Blues have a game in hand over the Gunners, with our clash against them taking place this Friday at Kingsmeadow.

It’ll be a sell-out crowd for two games running at our home, with the fans making their support for the Blues heard loud and clear against City on Sunday.

Speaking after the game, Nouwen discussed the performance from her perspective.

‘It wasn’t the prettiest game but overall we won and the three points are in so it’s really pleasing,' she said.

'We always go for a clean sheet. If you have one, almost every time you know you’re going to win.’

Blues boss Emma Hayes had spoken about the wind in her post-match interviews, comments that Nouwen echoed.

‘The wind was a big factor in the game,' the 22-year-old explained. 'In the second half, we had the wind against us so for them it was easier to get balls in behind and crosses in.

‘It was hard but I think we were all in the right positions defensively and we just fought for every ball.’

There were shouts of joy at the full-time whistle from players, staff and fans alike, with our No.3 explaining just what they meant.

‘It was relief! Everyone fought so hard throughout the game so it was just big happy faces from everyone at the end.’

Speaking on the importance of the clash, Nouwen added: ‘It was a really important win. This week we have a big game again and if we win the next game we’re back on top so that’s where we want to be.

‘I’m really looking forward to the Arsenal game, very much so.’

Hayes’ side take on Arsenal this Friday at Kingsmeadow in a top-of-the-table clash against the Gunners. The game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, kicking off at 7.45pm.
