Christian Pulisic has reiterated that it is only ‘half-time’ in our Champions League knockout tie with Lille, despite the Blues claiming a strong 2-0 first-leg victory.

The American shone on the left of our front three, causing problems to the Lille defence throughout with his direct running and capping his performance off with a well-taken goal to add to Kai Havertz’s opener in the 2-0 win.

Pulisic is delighted with the team performance at Stamford Bridge but is quick to point out that there is still plenty of football to be played in this European tie yet.

‘It’s a great start for us,’ Pulisic commented post-match. ‘We knew we needed to get a good result in this first leg.

‘I thought we defended really well throughout the game and we took our chances at the other end when we needed to.

‘Obviously there’s still a lot of work to do, it’s only half-time in the tie, but we are really happy with our work so far and with the lead we can take with us to Lille.

‘We know it will be a difficult game over there though. They are a dangerous team, with a lot of speed up front so we need to be careful of them on the counter-attack for sure.

‘But I’m sure if we put in another good performance like this one then we can come away with the victory again.’

The American was assisted by N’Golo Kante for his goal, with the Frenchman driving forward from midfield before slipping in Pulisic with a fine pass.

Our No.10 took a fantastic first touch to get away from his marker before coolly finishing past the goalkeeper to double our lead, with Pulisic running out of superlatives for N’Golo when speaking about the midfielder.

‘Kante is amazing,’ said Pulisic.

‘The way he drives with the ball is incredible and I knew he’d find me with the pass, so it was just a case of me staying up there with him and getting into the right area in the final third.

‘I was able to do that, N’Golo made the perfect pass and thankfully I had just enough room to touch it to the side and then pass it past the goalkeeper. So I’m really happy to have scored and to have helped the team get a good victory.’

As mentioned earlier, Pulisic was deployed in a left-forward role against the Ligue 1 side with Havertz and Hakim Ziyech making up the rest of the attacking line.

It’s a position Christian enjoys playing in and he feels his partnership with Kai and Hakim worked well last night.

‘I really enjoyed playing as part of the front three,’ added the American. ‘We have so many good attacking options so you know whichever guys come in will help the team.

‘Kai had a really good game for us and I enjoyed linking up with Hakim as well. They’re all really talented players and I think we all offer the team something a little bit different, which is good.

‘We all seem to gel really well and that’s a good thing to have in a team.’
