Mendy earns top praise

TV pundits Jamie Carragher and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink have hailed Edou Mendy’s ‘magnificent’ double save in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

Our goalkeeper was forced into a double stop after Naby Keita fired a low drive towards goal before Sadio Mane latched on to the rebound, only to be stunned to see it tipped over the bar by Mendy.

‘We talk about the two great chances Chelsea had where they should score but this is the biggest chance. It’s a really good initial save from the goalkeeper to get up as quick as he does,’ Carragher said, quoted by Metro.

‘Mane should score but you have to give credit to the goalkeeper. How quick he is up off the floor. It has to be a goal, but it's an absolutely fantastic save.’

Former Chelsea striker Hasselbaink added: ‘He’s a big big boy so for him to get up this quick and get his right hand to the ball is absolutely magnificent.’

Blues loanee tipped for bright future

Levi Colwill’s Huddersfield Town team-mate Lewis O’Brien has tipped the youngster to have a ’fantastic’ career.

The Chelsea Academy star scored on his birthday on Saturday in Huddersfield’s 2-0 win at Birmingham City.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live after that awway victory, O’Brien admitted Colwill has shocked some of the Terriers’ players with how quickly he has adapted to life in the English second tier.

‘When people like that come in, he’s a young player and you question is he going to perform?’ he said.

‘But he has stepped into the Championship unbelievably well - I’m sure he’s got a fantastic career ahead of him at the highest level.’

Hamann impressed by Havertz

Former Liverpool player Didi Hamann believes Kai Havertz is unaware of just how good he is.

Speaking to Genting Casino, quoted by the Metro, ahead of yesterday’s Carabao Cup final, the German praised his compatriot Havertz.

‘The one player who’s done well and of course scored in the Champions League final is Kai Havertz, but I still think he’s only done half of what he’s capable of doing because I think he’s such a good player,’ Hamann said.

‘Sometimes I feel he’s held back, or he doesn’t know how good he is, he’s an outstanding player,’ he added.

Hamann likened him to current Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, whom he shared many memorable years at Anfield with.

‘He’s obviously a different type of player to [Steven] Gerrard, but he’s a player who’s quick, not as quick as Stevie, but he’s very smart with his runs. He’s a player who can decide a game in a flash.’
