The German was named Man of the Match as we twice came from behind to defeat the Hatters 3-2 and book our place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, with Saul and Romelu Lukaku the other Blues on target at Kenilworth Road.

Navigating our way through a tricky tie was always the aim and while delighted to have done just that, Werner was quick to praise the challenge presented to us by our Championship hosts.

‘Cup games are always very difficult games, especially when you play away at a second division team who did very well,’ Werner stated.

‘Luton gave everything and they made it very hard for us, but in the end I think we were the better team and that’s why we got the win.’

After a challenging week on and off the pitch for the Blues, Werner was happy to play his part in an important win.

The striker was a constant thorn in the Luton side, working the ball to Saul for our opener before perfectly taking down Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s pass on his chest before finding the bottom corner for our second.

He was not finished there, either. With just over 10 minutes left to play, Werner got in down the right and sent over a low cross for strike partner Romelu Lukaku to tap home the winner.

'I’m happy with my performance,' added the German. 'I got my goal and made a couple of assists and I tried to help the team as much as I can and we managed to get the win at the end, so everything is good.

'It was a very good ball from Ruben and my first touch was okay for me as it gave me the space I needed to shoot.

‘Maybe I had a little bit of luck that it went against the post and then into the net rather than bouncing away but I’m happy to have scored and help the team.

‘It’s been a challenging week. We’ve gone from playing in front of 90,000 at Wembley in a cup final to coming here and playing in front of 10,000 which seemed like a cup final for Luton because of the atmosphere they created.

‘Both of the games were difficult to play in so after losing on Sunday, we wanted to show that we could recover straightaway and get back to winning ways and we managed to do that.

‘That was the aim and although it was a lot of hard work, we got there in the end and can move into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.’
