Maren Mjelde says she was inspired watching her team-mates lift the Vitality Women’s FA Cup trophy in December and wants to re-create that success this year, as Chelsea FC Women take on Birmingham City in the quarter-final this afternoon.

Mjelde has been out of action since November after picking up an injury, but returned to the fold when we beat Everton 3-0 midweek in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

The Norwegian came on for the final 10 minutes as we gained a vital three points in the race for the WSL title.

On making her comeback, Mjelde said: ‘It was good to be back again! I’ve been waiting for a long time to be back so it was a good moment for me to come on. The team have been doing really well and I bet Emma [Hayes] felt safe that she could put me on to get some minutes.’

The Blues have bolstered our ranks recently with Magdalena Eriksson, Erin Cuthbert and Bethany England all making recent returns from injuries.

‘It helps the team a lot that we have more players, not just for the games, but to have more players in training is really important now. Some of the girls have been playing a lot the whole season and it’s probably good for them to know as well that if something happens, even Emma to know, that she has options.

‘For me personally it’s just good to be back again with the team, I haven’t been back for a while. Same with Magda, so I think we just want to help the group the best we can.’

The games are coming thick and fast as we enter the business end of the season, something Mjelde is relishing.

‘It’s good for me, I haven’t played games for a long time. I missed the last part of the season last year and now I’m coming back for that part of the season this year and I know how tough that is both mentally and physically. So, I’m just happy to be back and to try and help and hopefully get some more minutes!’

Our No.18 is looking forward to getting a taste of some Women’s FA Cup action this afternoon.

‘I’m really excited, I didn’t play any of that last year. It’s a special competition, a special cup and I saw what the girls did in December so I want to experience that again as well.

‘We love this competition and we want to go as far as we can and of course the final is what we want. I got really inspired seeing the girls at Wembley in December and how well they did then. I was immediately thinking this could potentially happen again in May, something that hopefully will happen but there are still two games to go before we can get there.’

Mjelde is expecting a difficult test as we welcome Darren Carter’s Birmingham side to Kingsmeadow today.

‘It’s always tough, it’s an FA Cup quarter-final. All teams that play against us want to win, they want to do everything they can so we need to be prepared and be at our top and perform well to beat them. We are at home, so that helps us.

Today’s game against Birmingham kicks off at 2pm and will be streamed live on the FA Player.
