Chelsea FC Women captain Magdalena Eriksson speaks on the importance of today’s fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, the title race and her comeback from injury…

The Blues host Spurs at Kingsmeadow this evening and a win for Emma Hayes’ side would see us leapfrog Arsenal and go top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League for the first time this season.

Club captain Magdalena Eriksson recently returned to the team after suffering an injury in our Champions League clash against Wolfsburg in December.

Our No.16 scored on her return to Kingsmeadow and played a full 90 minutes as the Blues cruised to a 5-0 victory against Birmingham in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking about her comeback, Eriksson said: ‘It’s felt amazing to be back, it’s been a long time for me, one of the longest periods of my career where I’ve been out and I’ve really worked hard to get myself back to the point. It’s been really nice to be involved with the team again and to get my first 90 minutes always felt amazing.

‘It’s always special when I score because it happens so rarely! It was nice, I think the biggest part was just being able to fulfil the 90 minutes and that my body can handle the strain of that, so I think that is the biggest take from Sunday.’

Attention quickly turns to this evening’s match-up with Spurs, and Eriksson discusses just how important this evening’s fixture with the north London side is, adding: ‘Every single game we have left now is going to be like our cup final, that’s how we’re going to have to look at it.

‘The points are so extremely important, we have it in our hands still and that’s how we want to keep going. Every single game now no matter who’s on the other side is a massive game, the girls can feel that as well. It’s really coming into the business end of the season and the focus and the sharpness is there throughout the whole squad.

‘It’s really important to trust and to know that all the girls know the importance of this game and what it means for us as a team and as a club, I don’t think we have to even talk about that.

‘It’s important to focus on what we’re going to do out there on the pitch – it’s what you do out there which will eventually give you the win in the end, so it’s mostly important to focus on things that we can control and what we should do and the process behind that, then the result will follow.

‘I’m expecting a really tight game, a tough Tottenham that’s very solid defensively and have some really good, quality players that will make it difficult for us both attacking and defensively.’

The race for the WSL title is as close as it’s ever been and our captain says she and the team thrive from being in a position like this.

‘This is where we want to be - these kinds of positions where we are fighting for the title, we have been doing that consistently since I joined this club and I think that’s what we all thrive off. We love these kind of moments so it’s extremely exciting and the fact that we have it all in our hands is very important for us.’

Tonight’s game against Spurs kicks off at 7.45pm (UK time) and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football with coverage starting from 7pm.
