While Jorginho’s missed penalty against West Ham ultimately proved inconsequential for the Blues, the midfielder has been reflecting on his disappointment at the saved spot-kick and the external factors that affect a taker in those crucial moments before the run-up…

Christian Pulisic’s last-minute finish meant the Blues salvaged all three points in a tense London derby. Moments earlier, Lukasz Fabianski had thwarted the Italy international from 12 yards after Romelu Lukaku had been pulled back in the box.

It was the 35th spot-kick taken by Jorginho in a Chelsea shirt (including shoot-outs) and just the fifth miss during that time, though such an impressive record mattered little to the 30-year-old in the aftermath of Sunday’s 1-0 win.

‘When you have that little moment of doubt, that’s usually when you make the mistake,’ he said.

‘Maybe I had too much time to think about it, I don’t know. It went like that this time and I’m sorry.

‘I feel bad because it’s not a nice feeling.’

As well as the expectation and stress from having to score so late in a deadlocked game, a delay before the kick could be taken also added to the nervous energy as referee Michael Oliver consulted the pitchside monitor in deliberations over whether defender Craig Dawson’s foul warranted a red card.

Waiting even a couple of minutes longer than usual can build the pressure on a penalty taker and Jorginho confessed that sometimes his trick of switching off from the goings-on around him proves ineffective.

‘It’s a lot of pressure, especially in games like that when you need to win and it’s the last minutes,’ added our number five.

‘You try to isolate your mind from all that pressure, even though it’s hard, and then you have the VAR so it takes longer. It’s harder to keep focused but unfortunately this time it didn’t work.’

Jorginho will be hoping to get back on target against Manchester United tomorrow, just like he did in the reverse fixture back in November.
