Sam Kerr has scooped the prestigious Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year award following a phenomenal season on the pitch with Chelsea Women.

The news follows a big night for the team, who beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 yesterday evening in their second meeting with our London rivals in less than five days, with Sam netting her 18th Barclays FA Women’s Super League goal of the season and 28th of the campaign overall.

Kerr continues to sit top of the WSL goals table having scored 18 times in 18 games, with four assists. This impressively follows the No20’s Golden Boot, which she picked up last season, as well as her nomination for the FIFA Best Women’s Player award in November for the fifth consecutive year.

The Australian continuously finds herself in the running for the Barclays FA WSL Player of the Month accolade, most recently being nominated in March after scoring five goals in five WSL games. Not forgetting, Kerr’s epic goal in the 92nd minute against Aston Villa in March which sparked euphoria at Kingsmeadow and kept the Blues' title hopes well and truly alive.

Kerr also broke a club record by scoring in seven consecutive matches, finding the back of the net 10 times!

The presentation dinner for the annual FWA awards will take place on Thursday 5 May in London.

Fans can see Kerr and the Blues in action at Kingsmeadow one last time this season next Sunday, as we face Manchester United. Tickets are selling fast and are available to purchase here.
