Cesar Azpilicueta conceded the Blues’ defensive problems are costing us crucial points at the moment, and the skipper knows a big final effort is required if we are to end this season on a high.

Chelsea were 2-0 up against Wolves and seemingly in control at Stamford Bridge yesterday. However, letting in late goals on home soil has cost us regularly during 2021/22, and so it proved once more as the visitors hit back with almost the final kick of the game to leave SW6 with an improbable point.

‘It feels like a loss,’ admitted Azpilicueta afterwards.

‘To lose two points like this in the last minute is very disappointing. Even in the first half we conceded a few counter-attacks where they could have scored.

‘We used to be a very solid team, defending together. We didn’t make mistakes. Sometimes we have given goals away by ourselves. It’s very disappointing, very frustrating.

‘We are putting ourselves in a difficult position. We shouldn’t be here, we were in a much better position five games ago, but we are here, and now we need to get points if we want to finish in the Champions League places.’

In trying to explain our indifferent recent form, Azpilicueta acknowledged a long season might be catching up with us, but that is no excuse not to bring the curtain down on a historic campaign in the best way possible.

‘We have not been as sharp as we are normally in the past couple of games, we have so many games in our legs, we have been in so many competitions, but we are Chelsea and this is what we fight for every single season.

‘Everything is decided in the last couple of weeks and hopefully we can make it happen all together. We need a last push. We have to push ourselves. We have to do it even if we are all frustrated. We have to pick ourselves up together because we deserve to have a good end to the season.’
