Marcos Alonso's free-kick slammed into the frame of the goal early in the second half, while the Spaniard also had a number of other opportunities in open play, though the Blues were unable to find a way past Alisson in the Liverpool goal.

The Reds also hit the woodwork themselves, once through Luis Diaz and then Andy Robertson, while Trevoh Chalobah cleared off the line early on during a tense but frantic final under the arch.

Ultimately, the game was decided from 12 yards, just like it was between the two sides in February's Carabao Cup final, and Jurgen Klopp's side edged the shoot-out 6-5 after heartbreaking misses from Cesar Azpilicueta and Mason Mount.
