Colwill played the full 90 minutes in Yorkshire while Anjorin was an unused sub as a late Jordan Rhodes goal settled a tight contest and earned the hosts a 2-1 aggregate success.

In the first leg at Kenilworth Road on Friday, Colwill and Anjorin remained on the bench as the two teams played out a closely-fought 1-1 draw.

Daniel Sinani put Huddersfield ahead early on before Luton’s Sonny Bradley equalised from close range on the half-hour. The second period was short of clear chances although the home side did have a strong penalty appeal waved away, just as Huddersfield had inside the opening 20 seconds of the match.

Terriers boss Carlos Corberan confirmed Colwill didn’t start having missed the early part of last week through illness, but he was back in the team at a raucous John Smith’s Stadium tonight (Monday), deployed on the left side of a back three.

It was tough for Huddersfield in the first half, Colwill and his defensive colleagues kept very busy by a lively Luton showing. They were grateful to go in goalless.

Huddersfield improved after the interval, and thought they had taken the lead through Jonathan Hogg, only for the ref to spot a foul by Colwill off the ball as the set-piece came in. There wasn’t a lot in it.

Huddersfield were denied a penalty as the minutes ticked down and extra-time beckoned, but they got the vital third goal in the tie through sub Jordan Rhodes’ cute far-post finish seven minutes from time.

Anjorin was stripped and ready to come on prior to that, but defensive changes were then the order of the day for Huddersfield, who saw out the closing stages with little fuss to book their place at Wembley.

They will play Nottingham Forest or Sheffield United on Sunday 29 May. Forest lead 2-1 from the first leg ahead of Tuesday’s game at the City Ground.

At the weekend, Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour helped Crystal Palace and Norwich respectively to 1-1 draws away from home. Gallagher played the full game at Villa Park as the Eagles equalised late on, while Gilmour got an hour at Molineux, replaced shortly after Wolves had cancelled out Teemu Pukki’s opener.

Palace are now 11th ahead of a trip to Everton on Thursday. Southampton and Armando Broja host Liverpool tonight.

Tiemoue Bakayoko got his first minutes for AC Milan since mid-January, playing the final 10 minutes of their 2-0 home win over Atalanta. That victory leaves the Rossoneri needing just a draw at Sassuolo next weekend to win Serie A. They are two points ahead of Inter Milan and have a superior head-to-head record than their city rivals.

Venezia’s time in Serie A came to an end despite them earning a creditable 1-1 draw at Roma, with Ethan Ampadu playing the whole game in the heart of the defence. He came up against his former team-mate Tammy Abraham as the Venice side took the lead inside the opening minute. Roma equalised in the final quarter-hour.

Venezia’s relegation was confirmed prior to kick-off, only two wins in the second half of the season proving costly for them. It is Ampadu’s second consecutive relegation from a top-five European league, having been at Sheffield United last term.

Michy Batshuayi played the final 25 minutes of Besiktas’s 2-0 win at Goztepe, and in Slovenia, Karlo Ziger was back in the NK Rudar Velenje team having been unused for the past three games, but it was not a happy return as they lost 3-0 at Ilirija.
