It’s been a successful season for Chelsea FC Women who won the domestic double and here we review the 2021/22 campaign when the Blues clinched the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and Vitality Women’s FA Cup.

Emma Hayes’ side have dominated domestically this season, reaching the Continental Tyres League Cup final, Vitality Women’s FA Cup final and scooped the Barclays FA Women’s Super League title.

Here we take a look back at all the key moments this season…

Opening day

The 2021/22 campaign surprisingly started with an opening day defeat at the hands of Arsenal. A thrilling game foreshadowed what would be a thrilling season, with Arsenal running out 3-2 winners at the Emirates Stadium back in September.

Erin Cuthbert scored the Blues’ first goal of the campaign and Pernille Harder also opened her account on the day, however three goals from Arsenal saw our London counterparts take the win.

First win

It did not take long for the Blues to bounce back and we did so in style just a week later when we welcomed Everton to Kingsmeadow.

Hayes’ side emphatically beat the Toffees 4-0 thanks to goals from attacking trio Fran Kirby, Sam Kerr and Bethany England.

The win at Kingsmeadow set the tone for the Blues’ upcoming fixtures as we recorded another huge win a week later in Manchester.

Manchester United 1-6 Chelsea

Hayes’ side travelled north looking to pick up three points on the road and we did so in impressive style, beating Manchester United 6-1 at Leigh Sports Village.

Five different goalscorers which included Drew Spence, Jessie Fleming, Kerr, Harder and Kirby ensured the Blues picked up a huge win on the road at the end of September.

Our impressive form continued and we went on to pick up wins against Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City and Aston Villa before picking up a mammoth win in Manchester.

Manchester City 0-4 Chelsea

Hayes’ side made another statement of intent with a trip to the Academy Stadium in November. In a hugely dominant performance and to the surprise of the WSL, the Blues put four past Manchester City.

Kerr and Kirby again found themselves on the scoresheet alongside Fleming and captain Magdalena Eriksson in a memorable trip to Manchester.

A week later the Blues put five past Birmingham City at Kingsmeadow. Kirby hit a milestone of 100 Chelsea goals while Kerr scored her first hat-trick of the season, finishing off with an iconic backflip much to the delight of the home crowd.

After a scintillating and impressive November, December proved to be a rocky patch for the Blues. Following a shock exit from the Champions League group stages after a 4-0 defeat to Wolfsburg, the Blues then travelled to Reading where Hayes’ side were beaten 1-0 at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

2022: Fine form resumed

After the Christmas break the Blues found form again and have been on an impressive run ever since the turn of the New Year. Our first outing of 2022 saw the Blues progress to the semi-final of the Continental Cup with a 4-2 win at West Ham, and in our first league game of the year we were held to a 0-0 draw at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion.

We picked up our first three points just a few days later with a 2-0 win at home to West Ham.

League dominance

All eyes were on the WSL title race and the top two came head-to-head at Kingsmeadow as we welcomed Jonas Eidevall’s Arsenal under the lights.

Despite an entertaining game showcasing the quality of our league, neither side could find the breakthrough and the points were shared as we headed into the international break.

Last-gasp winner

A huge moment in this year’s race for the title has been our clash against Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow in March. Carla Ward’s side held strong against the Blues and it looked as if the title would edge in Arsenal’s favour, until Kerr popped up deep into stoppage time to snatch all three points.

A route-one goal with the assist from Zecira Musovic, Kerr took a touch and slammed her effort into the back of the net as Kingsmeadow erupted in jubilation as the challenge for the title stood firm.

After the win against Aston Villa, Chelsea hit fine goalscoring form, scoring three goals away at Everton before an outstanding 9-0 win at the King Power Stadium against Leicester at the end of the month.

April was yet another big month for Hayes’ side, who had been in second place behind Arsenal ever since the opening day. A 5-0 win against Reading and two wins against Tottenham Hotspur saw the Blues sit at the summit of the table with just one game to go.

Hayes had said all along she thought the title race would go down to the wire and the Chelsea boss was correct, with the title up for grabs on the final day of the season.

Last WSL day: title race

Hayes’ side hosted Manchester United on the final day of the season. In front of a sold-out Kingsmeadow crowd, the Blues had to win in order to clinch a third consecutive WSL title. United took the lead early on at Kingsmeadow through Martha Thomas, however it did not take long for Cuthbert to level the scoring.

The away side regained their lead moments later through Ella Toone and the Blues had everything to play for in the second half. Hayes’ side came out rampant for the second 45, a Kerr brace and a Reiten goal secured the win and the title for Chelsea.

Cup progress

In a heavily congested fixture list, the Blues progressed to the final of the Conti Cup, beating Manchester United 3-1 in the semi-final at Kingsmeadow.

It was heartbreak for Chelsea in the final, however, as Hayes’ side fell to a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the final.

Chelsea continued to impress in the FA Cup, recording big wins against Aston Villa, Leicester City and Birmingham City before beating Arsenal 2-0 in the semi-final.

It was a repeat of the Conti Cup final in the FA Cup, this time Hayes’ side ran out 3-2 winners in a thrilling game in front of a record crowd at Wembley Stadium. Sam Kerr netted twice and Erin Cuthbert scored a screamer as the Blues won the cup for the second consecutive year.

The Blues headed into the summer break having won two trophies in two weeks, capping off a fantastic domestic season for Hayes’ side, whom many of which will be taking part in this year’s UEFA Women’s EUROs.
