Two Chelsea players started with one introduced in the second half as it was UEFA Nations League honours shared when England met Germany on Tuesday night.

The match in Munich ended 1-1 with Harry Kane scoring from the penalty spot late on to cancel out a second-half opener from Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Jonas Hofmann.Mason Mount was one of six England players who kept their place from the opening group-stage defeat in Hungary on Saturday.Germany made seven changes from their draw away to Italy and Kai Havertz was one of those, taking a frontline place from Timo Werner who later came on. Reece James and Conor Gallagher remained on the Three Lions’ bench.

Havertz had the first shot of the game which was comfortably saved. Toni Rudiger, whose move from Chelsea to Real Madrid was confirmed last week, was also involved in an early chance for Germany.Despite tired legs or maybe because of them, it was a England vs Germany encounter in which better opportunities came later on. Germany’s moves looked more threatening for most of the first half but England finished it stronger.Midway through the first period the ball was in the net for the first time after Havertz had done well in a physical contest with Harry Maguire. Hofmann raced away to hit the target but a VAR review showed he had been offside.Havertz attacked a cross at the far post as half-time approached but England defended it well. Mount then won the ball and played a pass for Bukayo Saka to have a shot on target in added time before the break. The Arsenal man looked more likely to score with an attempt just wide moments after.

Havertz was involved in the move that led to Hoffmann firing the home side ahead five minutes into the second half but Mount almost pulled the scoreline back straight away with a sweet strike from the edge of the area, well saved by Manuel Neuer.Werner was introduced with 25 minutes left to play and his side still 1-0 up, shortly before Mount was withdrawn by England. After that there were saves at both ends, one from Jordan Pickford after a link-up between Havertz and Werner. Neuer did very well to keep out Kane but he could not prevent the England captain netting his 50th international goal after the striker himself had been tripped. There were no Chelsea players involved in Italy’s match against Hungary with Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri among several allowed a rest from this month’s Nations League fixtures. A 2-1 win over Hungary gives the European champions leadership of the group containing Germany and England with two games played. In the early stages of qualification for the next Africa Cup of Nations, reigning champions Senegal left it extremely late to make it two wins out of two but with Edou Mendy keeping a clean sheet against home side Rwanda, a Sadio Mane penalty with 98 minutes played was enough for a 1-0 win.Earlier in the day, Sam McClelland played in defence for Northern Ireland Under-21s who were pegged back to a 1-1 draw against Lithuania by a 97th-minute equaliser. Lucas Bergstrom was an unused sub for Finland Under-21s in their 3-0 win over Azerbaijan which keeps them joint-top of their Euro qualification group.Bryan Fiabema was a half-time sub for Norway Under-19s in a qualifier in Serbia and did his part in an attempted fightback from 3-0 down by supplying two assists, but he ended up on the wrong side of a 3-2 final score.Brodi Hughes and Lewis Hall started in an England Under-18 3-2 win over Austria although Hughes was sent off controversially right at the end. Jude Soonsup-Bell came on in the second half while Charlie Webster remained unused.
