With the Young Lions already guaranteed to finish in the top two and progress to the knockout stages, it was a much-changed side from manager Ian Foster. That meant captain Harvey Vale was given the evening off, but two of his Blues team-mates were in action.

Goalkeeper Teddy Sharman-Lowe made his first appearance of the tournament, while Bashir Humphreys kept his place in the side from the win over Serbia last time out, although switching from centre-back to midfield for this 1-0 victory against Israel.

It didn’t take England long to go ahead in Slovakia, capitalising on a poor kick from the opposition keeper to open the scoring through Manchester City striker Liam Delap just six minutes in.

Humphreys was denied by the goalkeeper in the second half and went close again from a late corner as England looked to kill the game off with a second, but the Young Lions had Sharman-Lowe to thank at the other end as an important save prevented Israel levelling on the counter with 20 minutes left.

England won all three of their fixtures in Group B to finish top, although Austria’s victory over Serbia in the other game means Israel also progress in second place. The Young Lions will now face Italy in the semi-finals, while Israel take on France in the other match, with both games being played on Tuesday.
