Chelsea’s battling resolve was evident once again on Sunday when the Blues scored twice in two minutes to overcome a deficit and secure a vital victory over Aston Villa on our return to Premier League action.
As we celebrate a vital three points at Villa Park which moved us a step close to qualification for next season’s Champions League, here is a look back at some other recent matches when quick goals have turned a potential defeat into an important victory for the Blues.
Burnley - August 2014
Newly promoted Burnley were in dreamland when Scott Arfield’s long-range effort beat Thibaut Courtois to give the Clarets a 14th-minute lead over title contenders Chelsea in our opening match of the 2014/15 season at Turf Moor.
However, their dream disappeared within seven minutes after a rapid response from Jose Mourinho’s side. Diego Costa levelled from close range three minutes later before a great spell of possession culminated in Cesc Fabregas setting up Andre Schurrle for a brilliant second in our 3-1 victory.
Watford - August 2016
The Blues appeared to be heading for defeat in our second game of the 2016/17 season when we went into the last 10 minutes at Vicarage Road trailing to an Etienne Capoue strike.
But the game was turned on its head when Michy Batshuayi levelled in the 80th minute after an Eden Hazard shot was spilled by Heurelho Gomes. Fabregas then sent Diego Costa clear with a brilliant long pass seven minutes later and the centre-forward slid a low shot past Gomes to secure a 2-1 win.
Southampton - April 2018
Chelsea looked down and out when we trailed Southampton by two goals after 70 minutes at St Mary’s Stadium before a comeback for the ages inspired by substitute Olivier Giroud.
In a dizzy eight-minute spell, the Frenchman headed in a Marcos Alonso cross to reduce the deficit before Eden Hazard levelled with a fine close-range finish. The comeback was completed in the 78th minute when a weak clearance fell to the striker who fired in a low shot to seal a stunning 3-2 win.
Liverpool - September 2018
Liverpool appeared to be heading for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup thanks to a goal by ex-Blue Daniel Sturridge before a late fightback at Anfield sent the Blues through instead.
Emerson put the visitors back on level terms when he turned the ball in after Ross Barkley’s header has been parried in the 79th minute and Hazard produced a superb solo effort six minutes later to seal a memorable 2-1 victory.
Arsenal - December 2019
Chelsea’s final game of 2019 was not going well as we trailed at the Emirates Stadium to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s early strike with only seven minutes left.
However, the tables were turned in a stunning conclusion as Jorginho equalised in the 83rd minute after an error by Gunners keeper Bernd Leno and Tammy Abraham fired in the winner four minutes later, after a quick counter-attack by the Blues.
