It was on this day in 2002 Stamford Bridge witnessed one of the greatest goals ever scored at our home ground.

Such was the audaciousness of Gianfranco Zola’s back-heeled, aerial volley on the run in an FA Cup replay against Norwich in 2002, many who witnessed it live were not certain what had just happened apart from a goal had been scored. That was until the chance to see the corner and improvised finish again was given on the big screens at the Bridge, and audible gasps acclaimed a moment of true majesty.

The wonder strike was the third of four goals the Blues put past Rob Green, with Mario Stanic, Frank Lampard and Mikael Forssell also helping to send Claudio Ranieri’s side through to round four. Zola dedicated to his goal to a young boy he visited in a hospice who had since passed away. The Italian maestro had promised he would score for him.

It was one of 80 goals Zola netted during his illustrious six-and-a-half-year association with the Blues, and you can watch them back in all their glory on the Fifth Stand app. Head to the Watch section and scroll down to Greatest Goalscorers, where you relive Zola’s best moments, as well as those of many of our other stars from over the years.
