The former Manchester United, Arsenal and Brighton forward has been confirmed as the latest addition to Xabi Alonso's squad and will meet up with his new Blues team-mates on tour in Asia shortly.

As this new chapter of Welbeck's career begins with Chelsea, we pick out some of the facts about the striker you might not already know...

• A Manchester native, Welbeck was also eligible to represent Ghana, the birthplace of his parents. Ghana expressed an interest in Welbeck’s availability, until he made his senior England debut against the African nation in March 2011.

• Welbeck is Brighton & Hove Albion’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, netting 46 times in 176 appearances for the Seagulls in that competition over six years at the Amex Stadium. That is 15 more than any other player has managed for Brighton, while he has 90 Premier League goals to his name in total.

• The striker wasted no time getting off the mark in the Premier League, scoring his first goal on his debut in the competition. Just over a week before his 18th birthday, Welbeck came off the bench to replace Park Ji-Sung for Manchester United when they hosted Stoke City at Old Trafford, curling into the top corner from outside the box to contribute to a 5-0 victory.

• Welbeck is one of only five players ever to score a goal for Brighton in European competition. That solitary goal gave them a 1-0 Europa League win over Roma, but still leaves him well short of new Chelsea team-mate Joao Pedro’s record Brighton European haul of six goals.

• Danny was the first homegrown striker from Manchester United’s youth system to make his debut for the senior team in 25 years, since a certain Mark Hughes. The latter also went on to represent Chelsea later in his career, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup with the Blues.

• Welbeck was the scorer of Brighton’s first-ever goal at Stamford Bridge across all competitions. There were plenty of future Chelsea links, as the striker headed in Marc Cucurella’s cross in the 91st minute to earn a late Premier League draw for Graham Potter’s side.

• Although 11 years separated Welbeck’s first (for Sunderland in 2010) and second (for Brighton in 2021) goals against Chelsea, the latter started a run of six goals in his last seven appearances against the Blues. He has only scored more times versus West Ham United and boyhood club Manchester United, finding the net eight times against each of them.

• Despite coming through the youth ranks of Manchester United, as a youngster Welbeck idolised and tried to base his game on Thierry Henry, a legend at title rivals Arsenal, who Danny would later represent for five years.

• Welbeck grew up on the same street in Manchester’s Longsight area as former Man Utd defender Wes Brown. It was Brown’s dad who introduced the striker to organised football at local team Fletcher Moss Rangers, and Wes' younger brother Reece became Welbeck’s closest friend during their time in the United youth system.

• Having been handed his Manchester United debut by Sir Alex Ferguson, Welbeck then became the first signing for the legendary manager’s son Darren Ferguson at Preston North End, when he joined the Championship side on loan in 2010 to gain more regular senior playing time as a youngster.
