On Monday, it was confirmed Henderson had become the latest addition to Xabi Alonso's squad, after leaving west London neighbours Brentford.

With 91 England caps to his name, plus Champions League and Premier League winners' medals around his neck, Henderson's career is a storied one.

Here we pick out 10 of the lesser-known facts about Chelsea's new midfielder...

• Henderson became the first person to be named as England national team’s Player of the Year at both senior and Under-21 level. He was the first-ever winner of the latter award after helping his side to a 100 per cent record in 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying, then getting the men’s award seven years later.

• Jordan made his international tournament debut at the 2012 UEFA European Championship, when he was a late call-up to replace the injured Frank Lampard. He has only missed one tournament for England since – Euro 2024 – with his appearance at this summer’s 2026 FIFA World Cup making him the only Englishman to have appeared at four World Cups and seven major tournaments in total.

• The midfielder made his debut in senior football at Stamford Bridge in 2008. He came off the bench at half-time to replace Steed Malbranque for Sunderland in a 5-0 Premier League defeat to the Blues, inspired by a Nicolas Anelka hat-trick.

• Although now well established as a central midfielder, Henderson started his senior career for Sunderland playing on the right wing, and won the club’s Young Player of the Year award for his performances there in 2009/10. The absence of Lee Cattermole saw him move into the middle, winning Young Player of the Year again as a central midfielder the next season.

• Even after he left Sunderland, his boyhood club continued to play a role in the significant moments of his career. They were the opponents for his Liverpool debut, as well as on the occasion of his 50th and 100th appearance for the Reds, the third of those coming at the Stadium of Light.

• Henderson became the first person to captain Liverpool in a UEFA Champions League final for over a decade when he led the Reds to Kyiv in 2018, although he ended up on the losing side as they were defeated 3-1 by Real Madrid.

• Jordan and his Liverpool team-mates did manage a Champions League triumph the next year, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in an all-English final in Madrid. Their penalty win over Chelsea in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul and extra-time victory over Flamengo in the FIFA Club World Cup final made him the first captain to lift all three continental trophies in the same year with an English club. He was the only one, until Cesar Azpilicueta matched the achievement with the Blues.

• When Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties at Wembley in the 2022 FA Cup final, it was an especially big moment for Henderson. It was the sixth trophy he had lifted as Reds captain, making him officially the club’s most successful skipper of all time.

• When Henderson brought his 12-year Liverpool career to an end in 2023 and moved for a brief spell with Al-Ettifaq, he retained a link to his former club. His manager in Saudi Arabia was another Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard – Henderson’s old team-mate and predecessor as Reds captain.

• Before returning to English football, Jordan spent one-and-a-half seasons in the Netherlands with Ajax. That made him only the second English player since 1979 to represent the Amsterdam club, with Chuba Akpom making his debut earlier that season.
